IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The table compares the number of visitors that came to ashdown museum before and after the refurbishment. By comparing both the values it is estimated that before refurbishment the number of visitors that are likely to visit was 74000 while the number of visitors after the refurbishment is 92000 which ultimately leads to the conclusion that refurbishment of museum attracts more people to visit.
The two pie charts illustrates the number of people that are satisfied visiting there whereas the two pie charts shows the comparison between satisfaction among the visitors before and after the museum's refurbishment.
In the very first pie chart 40% area is covered by the dissatisfaction of visitors while the visitors who are satisfied covers 15% of the area and almost 30% of visitors are satisfied. While the rest are either very satisfied or have no response at all.
The pie chart that shows the satisfaction of visitors after refurbishment have more positive response. 40% of the chart shows that the people are satisfied enough. 35% of the people are very satisfied. While the percentage of people who are dissatisfied much less than the previous one.
Conclusion is after the refurbishment of Ashdown Museum it attracts and satisfies more and more visitors.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main elements by reporting the visitor totals and comparing satisfaction before and after refurbishment. The figures you give for visitors (74,000 and 92,000), dissatisfaction before (40%), and the two positive categories after (40% satisfied and 35% very satisfied) are accurate. Your overall point that visitor numbers and satisfaction improved is relevant. However, some key details are left vague: before refurbishment, 15% were very satisfied and 10% were very dissatisfied, while after refurbishment dissatisfaction was 15% and very dissatisfaction 5%. The statement that the museum “attracts and satisfies more and more visitors” also overstates the evidence, since the survey shows proportions, not increasing numbers of satisfied visitors. Report the main shifts more precisely and distinguish satisfaction levels from visitor totals.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an opening about visitor numbers, paragraphs on the survey charts, and a concluding summary. This gives the reader an overall route through the information. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or unclear. The second paragraph repeats the same point about the pie charts, and phrases such as “While the rest” and “While the percentage…” begin incomplete or loosely connected thoughts. The first chart paragraph also moves from dissatisfaction to satisfaction without clearly identifying the remaining categories. To improve progression, use one paragraph for the visitor total and overview, then compare the survey results by grouping positive and negative responses across both years. Avoid repeating the chart introduction and connect comparisons directly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “refurbishment,” “dissatisfaction,” “satisfied,” and “response,” so the topic is generally clear. There is some attempt to vary wording, but several expressions are imprecise or repetitive: “the number of people that are satisfied visiting there,” “40% area is covered,” and repeated references to “the pie chart.” “Attracts and satisfies more and more visitors” is also not a precise description of the survey proportions. Choose concise data-reporting collocations such as “accounted for,” “the proportion of visitors,” and “positive responses.” Use “Ashdown Museum” consistently with correct capitalisation, and avoid describing chart segments as physical areas when reporting percentages.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the main message is usually understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with subject–verb agreement and sentence construction. For example, “The two pie charts illustrates” should be “illustrate,” while “the two pie charts shows” should be “show.” The clause “While the rest are either very satisfied or have no response at all” is not well integrated with the preceding sentence, and “While the percentage of people who are dissatisfied much less” lacks a verb such as “is.” There are also inconsistent article and sentence-boundary choices. Aim for complete, controlled comparisons—for example, “The dissatisfied share fell from 40% to 15%, while the very dissatisfied share dropped from 10% to 5%.”
