IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
in this chart we have given the record of the tourist go to the musium before the refurbishment and after the refurbishment in this chart we can easily se that there is the increase in the population of tourist on the musium after the refurbishment
in this graph we can se that in the year before the refurbishment the number of tourist is 74000 and after the refurbishment it is increased to 92000 and in graph there is a big difference in the dissatisfied persons in which year there is no refurbishment the dissatisfied level is very high of about 40 percent whereas after the refurbishment the number is reduced to 15 percent and in other case of no response peoples the level is same before and after the refurbishment it is 5%
also in the case of very dissatisfied peoples the difference is of about 5% before and after refurbishment the percentage before refurbishment is 10% but after the refurbishment it is reduced to 5% and if we talk about the very satisfied peoples there is also a big difference the percentage of peoples before refurbishment is 15% but after the refurbishment this number rises to 35% but in the satisfies section the peoples have a little bit difference the percentage before the refurbishment is 30% and in the year when the refurbishment is done then it rises to 40%

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You report the main overall changes accurately: visitor numbers rose from 74,000 to 92,000, dissatisfaction fell, and satisfaction increased. The key figures for all five survey categories are also represented correctly, including the unchanged 5% with no response. This gives the response relevant coverage of both the table and charts. However, there is no clearly separated overview that summarises the dominant pattern before the details; the opening mentions only the rise in visitors. Some comparisons are also less fully explained—for example, the two satisfied categories could be grouped to show that positive responses rose overall, while the dissatisfied categories fell. A concise overview and more selective grouping of the main trends would make the report more complete and developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response follows a generally understandable order: it introduces the visitor totals, then discusses dissatisfaction, no response, and the satisfaction categories. This helps the reader locate the main comparisons. However, the writing is presented as one continuous block, so the overview and supporting details are not clearly distinguished. Connections rely heavily on repeated phrases such as “before the refurbishment,” “after the refurbishment,” and “also,” while the long sentences joined by “and” make relationships between points less clear. Organise the report into an introduction, a brief overview, and one or two detail paragraphs. Use a wider range of precise links, such as “by contrast” or “meanwhile,” and make sure each sentence develops one comparison.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “refurbishment,” “percentage,” “dissatisfied,” and “reduced,” so the reader can understand the subject and most comparisons. However, the range is limited and several choices are repetitive or unsuitable for formal chart reporting. “Tourist” and “peoples” are used where “visitors” and “people” would be more natural, and “population of tourist on the museum” is an awkward way to describe visitor numbers. Phrases such as “big difference” and “a little bit difference” are vague and repeated. Aim for precise reporting language, including “the proportion of visitors,” “rose by,” and “declined to,” and check spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to combine comparisons in longer sentences, and the basic meaning is usually recoverable. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and attempts to extend sentences with repeated “and” often produce unclear or faulty constructions. For example, “in the year when the refurbishment is done then it rises to 40%” shifts tense and has an awkward clause structure; “the percentage of peoples before refurbishment is 15%” also lacks clear grammatical framing. Articles and sentence boundaries are often missing, and capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent. Use mostly clear past-tense reporting forms, such as “The proportion was 15% before refurbishment and rose to 35% afterwards,” and separate each main comparison into a complete sentence.
