IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
There is data on the Ashodown Museum, before and after refurbishment and results of surveys of visitor satisfaction.
The data shown is 2 types. The table shows the data on the number of visitors before and after, and the pie chart illustrates the data on visitor satisfaction.
The table clearly shows that there is a huge increase in visitors to Ashdown Museum after the refurbishment, from 74,000 to 92,000.
In the pie chart, it is clearly shown that before, 40% of visitors were dissatisfied, while after the refurbishment, this increased to very dissatisfied, and the people with no response remained the same at 5% in both.
Before, it was only 15% of visitors who were very satisfied, but after the refurbishment, it increased to 35%, which is 20%, high in number.
It is clearly understandable that not everyone likes new changes because after the refurbishment, the number of very satisfied visitors increased, but satisfied visitors remain same before with 5%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response identifies the overall rise in attendance, correctly reporting 74,000 before and 92,000 after refurbishment, and notes that the no-response share stayed at 5%. However, several key survey comparisons are misreported or unclear. The 40% dissatisfied before refurbishment fell to 15% afterwards; it did not increase to “very dissatisfied.” The satisfied share rose from 30% to 40%, rather than remaining the same, and the very dissatisfied share fell from 10% to 5%. The response also lacks a clear overview of the main pattern across the charts. To strengthen coverage, summarise that attendance and satisfaction increased overall while dissatisfaction declined, then support this with accurate comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic sequence: it introduces the visuals, discusses the table, and then turns to survey results. This gives the reader some sense of organisation, and phrases such as “before” and “after the refurbishment” help signal comparisons. However, the progression is weakened by repeated openings such as “The data…” and “It is clearly…,” and the final sentence is difficult to follow because it combines contrasting points without a clear relationship. The paragraphing also does not distinguish an overview from detailed comparisons. Use a concise introduction and overview, followed by logically grouped figures, and connect contrasts with precise linking phrases such as “by contrast” or “whereas.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary is sufficient to identify the visuals and report basic changes, using terms such as “refurbishment,” “visitors,” “satisfied,” and “dissatisfied.” However, the range is limited and some choices are inaccurate or awkward, which makes parts of the report unclear. “The data shown is 2 types” is an imprecise way to describe the table and charts, while “this increased to very dissatisfied” confuses a satisfaction category with a numerical trend. “20%, high in number” is also not a natural way to express the change. Aim for precise chart language, including “proportion,” “share,” “rose,” and “fell,” and use category labels consistently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response uses several simple sentences and attempts longer structures with “while” and “because,” so it shows some variety. Most of the basic meaning is understandable, but grammatical control is uneven. For example, “The data shown is 2 types” has an awkward construction, and “satisfied visitors remain same before with 5%” has problems with the verb form and sentence structure. The final sentence also joins ideas in a way that obscures their relationship. Practise forming clear comparison sentences with parallel structures, such as “The share who were satisfied rose from 30% to 40%, whereas the dissatisfied share fell.” Check articles and verb forms when describing the figures.
