IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Alot of Visitors have been visiting Ashdown Museum for a long time now. The number of Visitors before the refurbishment were seventy four thousand, After refurbishment, we see that the number has increased considerably. But that is not the main area of improvement. Survey show that the visitors that came to Ashdown Museum before refurbishment, 40% of them left dissatisfied, 10% were extremely dissatisfied and 5% gave no response. Only 30% visitors were left satisfied and 15% said that they were very satisfied. However, After refurbrishment these numbers have improved alot; 35% people that visited Ashdown Museum after refurbishment said that they were very satisfied, 40% said that they were just satisfied decreasing the number of dissatisfied visitors to only 15% and extremely dissatisfied ones to only 5% and the percentatge of visitors with no response remained consistent. Overall, the improvement seems to be very impactful in increasing the number of visitors and there satisifaction level.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main comparisons and report the figures accurately: visitors rose from 74,000 to 92,000, while satisfaction increased and dissatisfaction fell after refurbishment. The overview at the end identifies the broad improvement, and the response includes all five survey categories, including the unchanged 5% with no response. This gives the reader a clear account of the key changes. To make the summary more fully developed, state the overall pattern explicitly near the beginning—for example, that both attendance and satisfaction improved—and distinguish the largest shifts: very satisfied visitors rose by 20 percentage points, while dissatisfied visitors fell by 25. The opening claim that visitors had been coming for a long time is not supported by the data and is less relevant than a direct overview.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The information follows a generally understandable sequence: attendance is introduced, the before-refurbishment survey is described, and the after-refurbishment results are compared before a concluding overview. Contrast markers such as “However” help signal the change between periods. However, the response is presented as one continuous paragraph, so the overview and detailed comparisons are not clearly separated. Some transitions are also awkward or mechanical, particularly “But that is not the main area of improvement” and the long sentence beginning “However, After refurbishment.” Organise the response into a short introduction and overview followed by a paragraph comparing the survey results. Use clearer links such as “By contrast” and avoid repeating the museum’s name when the reference is already clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing the data, including “increased considerably,” “dissatisfied,” “remained consistent,” and “satisfaction level.” These choices make the main trends understandable. However, some wording is informal or imprecise for an academic report: “alot,” “just satisfied,” and “extremely dissatisfied” do not match the chart’s category labels exactly. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “refurbrishment,” “percentatge,” and “satisifaction,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for consistent, formal chart language and use the exact categories “satisfied” and “very dissatisfied.” A more precise range of terms such as “rose,” “declined,” and “accounted for” would also help you report comparisons without relying on repeated forms of “said.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes both simple statements and longer sentences with contrast and result clauses, as in “However, After refurbishment these numbers have improved…” This shows some ability to connect related ideas, and the intended meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain, especially in agreement and sentence construction. For example, “The number of Visitors … were” should use a singular verb, and “Survey show” needs a plural subject or a singular verb with an article. The final comparison sentence joins several changes into one long structure, making the relationships harder to follow. Capitalisation after commas is also inconsistent. Use shorter, controlled sentences for the figures and check subject–verb agreement and punctuation when combining clauses.
