IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Given table shows number of poeple who visited Ashdown Museum in year before its renovation and after it was renovated and the chart displays output of the study asking visitors about their satisfaction during the same period.
During the year before the Museum's refurbishment the travellers who were dissatisfied were the higest about 40% with satisfied individuals equal to 30% and 15% for very satisfied ones, But after the renovation Overall satisfied were more than half at 75% with 35% of very satisfied and 40% for satisfied ones and disatisfied reduced to 15% and people who didn't give any response were 5% and very dissatisfied people were 10% before and 5% after renewal of the Museum.
Overall it is clear that after the recontruction of the Museum total visitors increased from 74,000 before that time to 92,000 in the later year because more people were overall satisfied also increased during the same period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover both the visitor totals and the satisfaction survey, and the main comparisons are generally accurate: visitors rose from 74,000 to 92,000, while dissatisfaction fell and satisfaction increased. You also report several key percentages, including 40% dissatisfied before refurbishment and 35% very satisfied afterwards. However, the overview is placed at the end and the claim that visitor numbers rose “because” more people were satisfied suggests a cause that the charts do not establish. Some details are also less fully reported: the before-period’s very dissatisfied and no-response figures are omitted, and the overall satisfaction comparison is not clearly stated for both years. A concise overview of the main shifts, followed by a more systematic comparison, would make the response more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: it introduces the visuals, describes survey results, and ends with a summary of the visitor increase. Comparisons such as “before” and “after” help readers follow the time periods. However, the second paragraph combines many figures in one long sentence, making the relationships between categories harder to track. The overview also appears only in the final paragraph, after the detailed figures, rather than guiding the reader near the beginning. Some linking is awkward, particularly “because more people were overall satisfied also increased,” where the connection between the ideas is unclear. Use separate sentences or a compact comparison structure for the survey data, and place a clear overview before the details.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing the visuals, including “refurbishment,” “dissatisfied,” “satisfied,” and “increased,” so the main information remains understandable. There is also some attempt to vary wording with “renovation” and “reconstruction.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “output of the study” is not a suitable description of survey results, and “travellers” does not accurately refer to museum visitors. Spelling errors such as “poeple,” “higest,” “disatisfied,” and “recontruction” also reduce precision. Aim for consistent, accurate terms such as “visitors,” “survey results,” and “refurbishment,” and check spelling carefully. More precise collocations would make the report sound more natural and formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a time clause beginning “During the year before…” and a comparison using “after the renovation.” The main figures and trends can generally be understood, but some grammatical errors make the sentences less controlled. For example, “Given table shows” is missing an article, while “Overall satisfied were more than half” has an unclear structure and should identify the proportion of visitors who were satisfied. The final clause, “because more people were overall satisfied also increased,” lacks a clear grammatical connection between its ideas. Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, especially the comma before “But.” Build shorter sentences around one comparison at a time, and check articles, clause structure, and punctuation.
