IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The table gives the information about the ashdown museum. In these two pictures we see the camparison about visitors before refurbishment and after refurbishment.

Overall, it can be clearly seen that the percentages are changed before and after refurbishment for example the dissatisfied and sattisfied are changed with passage of time. Before refurbishment dissatisfied is abbout about 40 percent and sattisfied is 30 percent but these are changed after refurbishment.

the result of visitor satisfaction is affected before and after refurbishment we clearly see that it is affected that in before refurbishment very sattisfied is 15 percent and sattisfied is about 30 percent , dissatisfied is 40 percent very sattisfied is 10 percent and in no reponse is about 5 percent.

But after the refurbishment the very sattisfied is about 35 percent, sattisfied is 40 percent, dissatisfied is 15 percent, very sattisfied is 5 percent and in no reponse is about 5 percent .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the main subject and report several relevant percentages, including the rise in satisfaction and the fall in dissatisfaction after refurbishment. However, the overview is vague: “the percentages are changed” does not clearly summarise the overall shift, and the table’s visitor totals (74,000 before and 92,000 after) are omitted. There is also a significant data-label error: before refurbishment, 10% were very dissatisfied, but you report this as “very satisfied”; the same category is mislabelled after refurbishment, where 5% were very dissatisfied. These omissions and inaccuracies mean the task is only partly covered and the key features are not consistently clear. State the visitor increase and accurately compare the satisfaction categories.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has separate paragraphs for an introduction, an overview and the two survey periods, so there is some basic organisation. However, progression is limited: the overview repeats that results changed without explaining the main pattern, and the final two paragraphs largely list figures rather than developing a clear comparison. Linking is also repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “before refurbishment” and “after refurbishment,” while phrases such as “for example” do not lead to a well-formed explanation. Improve the sequence by giving a concise overview first, then grouping the positive responses and negative responses for comparison. Clearer referencing and fewer repeated phrases would make the relationships between figures easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “refurbishment,” “percentages,” “dissatisfied” and “visitor satisfaction,” which allows the reader to recognise the topic. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or repetitive. “The percentages are changed” is an imprecise way to describe the survey results, and “the result of visitor satisfaction is affected” is unclear. Repeated forms such as “sattisfied” and “reponse” also make the writing less reliable. Use precise terms for the categories and describe changes directly—for example, satisfaction increased while dissatisfaction declined. Check spelling carefully and avoid repeating the same category labels when a clear comparison can be made.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response includes simple statements and attempts a longer sentence, such as “Overall, it can be clearly seen that the percentages are changed before and after refurbishment.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences awkward or difficult to interpret. For example, “the result of visitor satisfaction is affected before and after refurbishment” has an unclear grammatical relationship, while “in before refurbishment” uses an incorrect prepositional pattern. Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also inconsistent, as in the run-on opening paragraph and missing spaces after full stops. Practise accurate comparative sentence patterns, such as “The proportion who were satisfied rose from 30% to 40%,” and proofread each sentence for structure and punctuation.
