IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given table illustrates the data of the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Meseum. Whereas the piechart represent the survey of the vistors satisfaction.

To begin with, the table shows that there were 74,000 visitors to the Ashdown Museum during the year before the refurbishment. However, after the refurbishment of the Ashdown Museum the visitors toll increased to almost 92,000.

On the other side, the results of the survery of visitors were drastically changed, for instance, the toll of very satisfied vistors increased to 35% after the refurbishment, whereas it was only 15% of total share before the refurbishment of the Museum. Satisfied visitors share was also seemed to be increased by 10% after the refurbishment.

The major change was there was a decline in the dissatisfied visitors that were converted. Earlier it was 40% and later it changed to 15% after the refurbishment. Furthermore, Ve

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You report several key figures accurately: visitors rose from 74,000 to 92,000, very satisfied responses increased from 15% to 35%, satisfied responses rose from 30% to 40%, and dissatisfied responses fell from 40% to 15%. However, the response ends abruptly at “Furthermore, Ve”, so the final category and any overall summary are missing. There is no clear overview of the main pattern, such as the rise in visitor numbers and positive satisfaction alongside the fall in dissatisfaction. The figures for very dissatisfied visitors and no response are also not covered. The response is 146 words, below the required 150. Develop a complete overview and finish reporting the main comparisons to address the task more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic paragraph structure: it introduces the visuals, discusses visitor numbers, and then turns to satisfaction results. Linking expressions such as “To begin with”, “However” and “Furthermore” help signal relationships between points. Nevertheless, progression is limited: the satisfaction paragraph moves through figures without a clear organising overview, and the final sentence is cut off at “Furthermore, Ve”, leaving the discussion incomplete. Some transitions are also imprecise, particularly “On the other side”, which does not clearly introduce a contrast. Group the satisfaction categories into positive and negative responses, and use a concluding overview to make the sequence of information easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “refurbishment”, “visitors”, “satisfaction”, “increased” and “decline”, so the main information is generally understandable. There is some attempt to vary wording with “toll” and “share”, but these are not natural choices for visitor totals or survey proportions. Spelling errors such as “Meseum”, “vistors” and “survery” are noticeable, while “piechart” is not the appropriate label for the survey charts. Aim for accurate, conventional terms and check spelling carefully. For example, use “number of visitors” rather than “visitors toll”, and “percentage” or “proportion” rather than “share” when describing survey results.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “whereas” and a clause beginning “that were converted”. Some sentences communicate the figures clearly, such as “there were 74,000 visitors … during the year before the refurbishment.” However, errors are frequent, and some structures are difficult to interpret. In “Satisfied visitors share was also seemed to be increased”, the verb construction is faulty; write “The proportion of satisfied visitors also increased.” The opening fragment beginning “Whereas” is not a complete sentence, and “the toll of very satisfied visitors increased to 35%” uses an unclear grammatical pattern. Practise complete sentences and consistent past-tense reporting, while checking articles and subject–verb constructions.
