IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table represents the number of people who has visited Ashdown Museum during this year and the year after it was renovated. The pie charts portray the result of how the visitors have expressed their experience of their visit in the both time frame.

Overall, the table shows that the number of visitors after the refurbishment is higher than the number of visitors before the refurbishment. The pie charts clearly portray that the amount of satisfied people is higher in the year the museum was refurbished. But there is a noticeable amount of dissatisfaction in the year before the refurbishment.

From the table, the amount of people visited in the year after the refurbishment is 92000, whereas the amount was 74000 before the refurbishment. This shows the significance of the refurbishment of the museum.

The first pie chart represents people's satisfaction survey in the year before refurbishment. The proportion of dissatisfied people is higher than the satisfied people. Which are respectively 40 and 30. The proportion of very satisfied people and the people who has no response are combinedly similar as the amount of very dissatisfied people, which is 15.

The second pie chart illustrates the drastic change in the survey in the year after the refurbishment. The proportion of satisfied people was 40 which is similar to the people who were dissatisfied in the last year. The amount pf people who were very satisfied last year has also increased by 35 in this year. Very few people are dissatisfied with the refurbishment by 15. The amount of people who was very dissatisfied and who had no response show a similar amount of 5.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main features and give a clear overview: visitor numbers rose from 74,000 to 92,000, while satisfaction was generally higher after refurbishment. Most figures are reported accurately, including the 40% dissatisfied and 30% satisfied before, and the 40% satisfied and 15% dissatisfied after. This meets the task well, with some of the detail and interpretation already approaching a more fully developed account. However, one comparison is unclear: the combined 15% for very satisfied and no response before is not “similar” to the 10% who were very dissatisfied. Also, “the year the museum was refurbished” is not quite the same as the year after refurbishment, and the claim that the visitor increase shows the refurbishment’s significance goes beyond what the data proves. Make comparisons more precise and keep conclusions strictly data-based.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for visitor numbers and the two survey periods. This makes the information easy to locate, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “whereas,” and “The second pie chart” help guide the reader. Some cohesion is less controlled, however. Repeated references to “the refurbishment” and “the amount of people” make the progression feel mechanical, while “Which are respectively 40 and 30” is an incomplete sentence and interrupts the flow. The time references “last year” and “this year” are also not always clear. Use more precise references to the before- and after-refurbishment periods, and connect comparisons within sentences rather than relying on repeated chart-by-chart openings.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “dissatisfaction,” “survey,” and “refurbishment,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal reporting language, such as “portray” and “illustrates.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive: “the amount of people” should be “the number of people,” “combinedly similar” is unnatural, and “expressed their experience” does not clearly describe survey satisfaction. The typo “pf” and repeated use of “amount” also reduce precision. Aim for natural, accurate combinations such as “share of visitors,” “reported being satisfied,” and “rose substantially,” while varying repeated terms without choosing words that distort the data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including comparisons with “whereas” and clauses introduced by “that.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “people who has visited” has incorrect subject–verb agreement, and “people who has no response” repeats this problem; “people who was very dissatisfied” also needs agreement. “The proportion of dissatisfied people is higher than the satisfied people. Which are respectively 40 and 30” contains an incomplete follow-on sentence and an unclear comparison. There are also awkward tense and article patterns in “during this year and the year after it was renovated.” Check agreement in relative clauses, make sure each sentence has a complete main clause, and use consistent past-tense framing for the two periods.
