IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

THE TABLE SHOWS THE NUMBER OF VISITORS TO ASHDOWN MUSEUM BEFORE AND AFTER REFURBISHMENT. THE CHART COMPARE VISITOR SATISFACTION DURING THE SAME PERIOD.

OVERALL, THE NUMBER OF VISITORS ARE INCREASED SIGNIFICANTLY AFTER THE REFURBISHMENT. VISITORS SATISFACTION ALSO IMPROVED CONSIDERABLY. THE PORTIPON OF SATISFACTION ALSO IMPROVED TO INCREASED VISITORS.

DURING THE YEAR BEFORE REFURBISHMENT 74,000 VISITORS BUT THERE IS A DRAMATICALLY CHANGE OF AFTER REFURBISHMENT THE TOTAL VISITORS ARE 92,000. THIS SHOWS THAT THE MUSEUM BECOME MORE POPULAR AFTER THE REFURBISMENT.

REGARDING SATISFACTION, ONLY 15% OF VISITORS WERE SATISFIED BEFORE THE REFURBISHMENT WHEREASE THIS FIGURE MORE THAN DOUBLED TO 35% AFTERWARDS. SIMILARLY, THE PROPORTION OF THIS SATISFACTION VISITORS ARE INCREASED FROM 30% TO 40%. THE PERCENTAGE OF VISITORS WHO WERE DISSATISFIED FELL FROM 40% TO 15% WHILE THOSE WHO WEW VERY DISSATISFIED DECREASED FROM 10% TO 5%.

THE REFURBISHMENT APPEARS TO HAVE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON BOTH VISITORS NUMBERS AND SATISFACTION.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You cover the main features and make relevant comparisons: visitor numbers rose from 74,000 to 92,000, while satisfaction increased and dissatisfaction declined. The overview identifies these broad trends, and the figures for the satisfaction categories are accurately reported. This gives the response a clear, supported account of the data. However, the overview includes the unclear claim that satisfaction “improved to increased visitors,” which suggests a causal link the charts do not establish. Also, “only 15% ... were satisfied” mislabels the 15% who were very satisfied; the satisfied category was 30% before refurbishment. Distinguish the two positive categories precisely and keep the overview focused on observable changes to make the reporting more consistently accurate.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on visitor totals, and a paragraph comparing satisfaction categories. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Similarly,” and “while” help signal the relationships between points, and the final sentence provides a concise concluding summary. This organisation makes the main message easy to follow. Some connections are less clear, particularly “The portipon of satisfaction also improved to increased visitors,” where the relationship between satisfaction and visitor numbers is difficult to interpret. The satisfaction paragraph also moves through several figures in a compressed sequence. Use clearer references and group the positive categories together before contrasting them with dissatisfaction, so the progression remains smooth and precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “refurbishment,” “proportion,” “dissatisfied,” and “dramatically,” and you attempt to describe change with terms such as “increased,” “fell,” and “decreased.” However, inaccurate word forms, spelling, and collocations are frequent enough to limit precision: “portipon” is misspelled, “visitors satisfaction” is awkward, and “a dramatically change” uses the wrong form. “This satisfaction visitors” is also unclear, while “the total visitors” is not a natural expression in this context. These choices sometimes make the intended comparison harder to understand. Build a reliable set of chart-reporting phrases and check spelling and word forms, especially when adapting nouns and adjectives.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “wherease” and a comparison using “while.” However, grammatical errors occur frequently, and several sentences are incomplete or have faulty verb patterns. For example, “During the year before refurbishment 74,000 visitors” lacks a main verb, while “the number of visitors are increased” has incorrect agreement and verb form. In “this figure more than doubled,” a verb is missing, and “the proportion ... are increased” also has an incorrect verb construction. These errors can make relationships between figures difficult to follow. Practise complete clauses with accurate past-tense verbs, subject–verb agreement, and articles, then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and finite verb.
