Student answer (Band 6.0)
The table shows the number of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished while the pie chart illustrates the results of surveys of visitors satisfaction.
Overall, the number of visitors increased during the year after refurbishment while the number of satisfied and very satisfied users has increased massively after refurbishment. Meanwhile the proportion of visitors with no response remained the same.
looking at the table first, the total number of visitors to Asdown Museum during the year before refurbishment was 74,000 while the number of visitors added y 18000 after the refurbishment and making up with 92,000.
looking at results of surveys of year before refurbishment, unsatisfied visitors were the highest in proportion at 40%, satisfied customers account for 30% which was second on the rank, followed by very satisfied visitors, the total percentage was 15% only.
both dissatisfied and no response visitors has the lowest percentages, 10% and 5% respectively.
Year after refurbishment, the number of very satisfied visitors increased by 20%, which was the highest in record, followed by satisfied visitors, the percentage was 40% with 10% of increment. Meanwhile the proportion of dissatisfied decreased by 25% which was the great achievement. Both dissatisfied and without any response proportion remained the same , each making just 5%.
In contrast, the proportion of staisfied and very satisfied visitors increased after a year of refurbishment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main features and give a clear overview: visitor numbers rose, satisfaction improved, and the no-response share stayed unchanged. Most figures are accurately reported, including 74,000 and 92,000 visitors and the before-and-after satisfaction percentages. The comparison that very satisfied visitors rose by 20 percentage points and dissatisfied visitors fell by 25 points is also grounded in the data. This meets the task well, with some of the detail and comparisons already showing the precision expected at a stronger level. However, the final sentence repeats the overview, and the account of the after-refurbishment results is less complete: it does not clearly report the 5% very dissatisfied figure, and “both dissatisfied and without any response … each making just 5%” incorrectly groups categories that are 15% and 5%. Clarify this comparison for fuller coverage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by details for the two periods. Phrases such as “looking at the table first” and “Year after refurbishment” help signal the shift between data sets. However, progression is weakened by mechanical sequencing and repetition. The final sentence restates the overview rather than adding information, while “Meanwhile” and “In contrast” do not always express a clear relationship between the figures. The paragraph about the post-refurbishment survey also contains a confusing comparison, making the reader work to identify which categories are 15% and 5%. Group the satisfaction categories consistently and use linking expressions only when their relationship is clear; this would make the overall arrangement more coherent.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “increased,” “decreased,” “refurbishment,” and “account for.” These choices allow you to describe the main trends and make comparisons. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “the highest in proportion” and “the highest in record,” but these are not natural collocations. “Unsatisfied” is less precise than “dissatisfied” for the chart category, and “users” is not the best term for museum visitors. Spelling slips such as “Asdown” and “staisfied” also reduce accuracy. Aim for standard chart language and check spelling; more precise, natural collocations would make your descriptions clearer and more flexible.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, and the main message is generally understandable. For example, the opening sentence combines the table and survey information, while “while” is used to contrast visitor totals. However, some errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction remain. In “the number of satisfied and very satisfied users has increased,” the plural categories do not fit the singular verb construction; “visitors added y 18000 … and making up with 92,000” is also structurally unclear. In “both dissatisfied and no response visitors has,” the subject–verb agreement is incorrect. Review how to form complete clauses and maintain consistent tense, especially when describing past data. Greater control of these patterns would make the comparisons easier to follow.
