IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The pie charts illustrate the comparison of total number of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year and after it was revamped.
Overall, there are significant variations and total number of visitors increased after museum refurbishment. Additionally, the satisfaction level of people also increased, whereas dissatisfaction level of people decreased.
Firstly, the total number of visitors before the revamped of museum was 74000 and after the refurbished the total number of people climbed to 92000. Furthermore, when the museum was not transformed 15 percent of people were very satisfied, and 30 percent of visitors were satisfied. Moreover, out of 100 percent of individuals 40 percent of people were dissatisfied and 10 percent were very dissatisfied. Lastly, 10 percent of people did not respond to the surveys.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main overall trends correctly: visitor numbers rose from 74,000 to 92,000, and satisfaction improved while dissatisfaction declined. You also report several figures for the first survey accurately. However, the response is incomplete: it stops at “Subsequently, after the”, so it gives no survey results for the year after refurbishment, an important part of the task. The no-response figure before refurbishment is also reported as 10%, whereas the chart shows 5%. The response is 121 words, below the required 150, which limits the detail and coverage. To strengthen the report, complete the comparison of both survey periods and check every figure against the chart.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation: an opening statement is followed by an overview and then a paragraph about the pre-refurbishment figures. Sequencing words such as “Firstly” and “Furthermore” help signal the order of information. However, the response has no completed final section; “Subsequently, after the” is an unfinished transition, so the comparison does not progress to the second survey period. Several linking expressions (“Moreover”, “Lastly”) create a list-like sequence rather than showing clear relationships between the figures. Use separate, complete paragraphs for the overview and the two periods, and connect the satisfaction categories through direct comparisons. This would give the report a clearer overall progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant vocabulary for describing charts, including “increased”, “climbed”, “satisfaction level” and “dissatisfaction level”, and the meaning is generally understandable. There is also an attempt to vary wording with “revamped”, “transformed” and “refurbished”. However, some choices are inaccurate or awkward: “the year and after it was revamped” is unclear, and “before the revamped of museum” uses the wrong form. “Total number of people” is less precise than “number of visitors”, while “significant variations” does not clearly describe the main trends. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and consistent terms for the refurbishment and survey responses.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes both simple statements and some longer sentences, and most of the intended meaning can be followed. However, control is uneven in several sentence patterns. For example, “during the year and after it was revamped” is missing a clear comparison structure, and “before the revamped of museum was 74000” has an incorrect grammatical form and article use. The final fragment, “Subsequently, after the”, is incomplete and leaves the sentence unfinished. There are also awkward constructions such as “after the refurbished the total number”. Practise complete comparative sentences, accurate noun phrases, and articles, then proofread for sentence boundaries so that every clause is complete.
