IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In modern times majority of medical related research projects are being financed by private cooperation's. In my opinion, these studies should be funded by governmental cooperation rather than private or individuals, it is because the government-based research are generally in the best interest of general public and research done by private or individuals focus more on their own interests rather than investing for public health.

The primary reason why I hold this view is that the medical project run by government benefits overall general population rather than focusing on certain group of our society. For example, the research on polio vaccinations which was under the government's power, turns to benefit every person doesn't matter what social, economic background they are from, and it was also free of cost which is great news for those who cannot these vaccinations.

Another support to my opinion is that private companies mostly work for their own benefit and are interested in the investment of their own companies so majority of the time they focused more on what will promote their product and which will benefit the most in sales. Their products are also not easily available to everyone they target certain demographic groups. For instances, the private skincare companies target specific type of people for their products and not everyone can buy them because it is expensive. While the individuals conducting research on medical projects can take a lot of time due to lack of proper resources needed and also reliability and validity can vary as well, plus it is difficult to put out the finding into the public.

In conclusion, medical research project should be carried out by government and not by private companies or individuals because this way general population can benefit more from these rather than only few societies of special class of people benefiting from these new and advance medical research.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you favour government funding because it is more likely to serve the public than private or individual interests. Both main reasons are relevant, and the polio-vaccination example helps illustrate broad public benefit. You also address private companies and individual researchers, so the response covers the main alternatives in the question. However, the discussion is uneven: the point about individuals is brief, and the skincare example concerns commercial products rather than medical research, so it supports your argument less directly. To strengthen the response, explain more specifically how public funding improves access to medical findings and give a focused example of research priorities that private funding might neglect.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. Linking phrases such as “The primary reason,” “Another support,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow. This provides a coherent framework, though some connections are mechanical and a few references are unclear. For example, “these” in the conclusion does not clearly identify whether it refers to projects, findings, or treatments, while the long second body paragraph combines private companies and individual researchers without a clear transition between them. Separate those ideas or use a more explicit linking sentence, and make pronoun references precise to improve the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your argument, including “medical research projects,” “public health,” “vaccinations,” and “reliability and validity.” However, several noticeable word-choice and collocation problems make the expression less natural and sometimes imprecise. “Private cooperation's” appears to mean “private corporations,” while “under the government's power” is not a natural way to describe publicly funded research. Phrases such as “overall general population,” “special class of people,” and “advance medical research” also show limited control of idiomatic academic wording. Aim for precise terms such as “publicly funded research,” “the general population,” and “advanced medical treatments,” and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “because,” “rather than,” and “which,” and the main argument remains understandable. Some grammatical errors nevertheless recur. For example, “the government-based research are” has subject–verb disagreement, and “the research … turns to benefit” uses an incorrect verb form. The sentence beginning “For example” also contains a run-on structure, while “doesn't matter what social, economic background they are from” lacks a grammatical construction such as “regardless of their social or economic background.” Review agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence boundaries. Breaking the longest sentences into shorter units would help you retain complex ideas with greater accuracy.
