IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Medical researches are very common now a days. Some people think these researche projects should be funded by private companies. From my perspective researches should be carried by government instead of individuals and private companies because government have more resources to spend on public health well-being.
On the one hand, private companies invest large amount of money on medical research projects. They are more keen to find new formulas of medicine for the treatment of diverse diseases. For example, pharmaceutical companies invest huge amount in research to find new medicine formula to treat diseases such as, cancer.
On the other hand, i believe that government is more suitable for funding in medical research owing to, they have enough resources to invest and they can perform research on common issues which our society is facing these days. For instance, heart diseases and diabetes. Moreover, government will provide funds without any personal advantage and profit. They will perform plenty of researches for improving the health care system of their country.
Furthermore, individuals cannot involve themselves in medical researches because they don't have experience about these researches. In addition, they don't have enouph funds to spend and they are not linked with any teams of scientists.
In conclusion, private companies and individuals can help in providing funds to government for medical research projects instead of performing research by their own selfes. Government can work with other countries scientists and can perform a research on big perspective which will impact on introducing different kind of medicines for people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you favour government funding, and you address private companies and individuals as alternatives. The response gives relevant reasons, including government resources, public-health priorities and the lack of funds or expertise available to individuals. The examples of cancer, heart disease and diabetes help make the topic concrete. However, some points are asserted rather than explained: for example, you say government funding has no “personal advantage and profit” but do not show how this leads to better research outcomes. The role of private companies is also only briefly discussed, and the conclusion introduces international cooperation without developing it. Explain and support these less-developed ideas more fully to make the argument more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, the body paragraphs consider private companies, government and individuals, and a conclusion restates your position. Linking phrases such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “Furthermore” make the progression easy to follow. However, the contrast between the first two paragraphs is somewhat mechanical, and some connections between claims are unclear. In “government is more suitable for funding … owing to, they have enough resources,” the reason is not smoothly connected to the claim. The conclusion also moves quickly from individual and company funding to cooperation with other countries. Use clearer links between each reason and its consequence, and ensure each paragraph develops one main point before moving on.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “medical research projects,” “pharmaceutical companies,” “treatment,” “diseases,” and “health care system.” These choices make your main ideas understandable, and you attempt more specific expressions such as “public health well-being.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “medical researches,” “new formulas of medicine,” and “perform a research on big perspective.” Spelling errors such as “researche,” “enouph,” and “selfes” also reduce accuracy. Aim to use standard collocations and check word forms and spelling; for example, “medical research” is generally uncountable, and “conduct research on a broader scale” is more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, including clauses with “because,” “which,” and “instead of.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Subject–verb agreement is inaccurate in “government have more resources,” and the clause “owing to, they have enough resources” has an incorrect construction and punctuation. There are also issues with articles and sentence structure, as in “for funding in medical research” and “for improving the health care system of their country.” Capitalisation of “I” is inconsistent. To improve control, practise accurate agreement and article use, and build complex sentences with complete, correctly connected clauses.
