IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Medical research projects play a vital role to the nation because they aid people with health related issues. In recent years, medical research projects are funded by private companies, however, some people believe that these kinds of projects should be funded by individuals themselves or the government. In my opinion, private companies should be held liable to allocate adequate budget for medical research projects.
One of the major reasons why private companies should be the one to fund the medical research projects is because government should focus more to the most substantial issues of the country such as education. For instance, in the Philippines, most Filipinos have no access to proper education. Elementary public school facilities are broken and are not able to be renovated because of the lack of budget. The educational materials and supplies such as notebooks, books and pencils are not enough for students. As a result, young learners tend to stop studying. The enrollment in each academic year tend to significantly decline in the future.
In addition, as some countries face challenges with education, housing and other personal issues, individuals have no means to fund their own medical research projects. Private companies are capable of doing so because they have enough fundings allocated for this. For example, some researchers who want make research projects have only limited resources to work on the projects. Consequently, there is a possibilty that they might not be able to accomplish their works. On the other hand, if private sectors will financially assist them, it is easier and more convenvenient to the researchers to finish the projects.
In conclusion, although medical research projects are important for the future use because researchers might invent medicines or procedures that can save a number of people's lives, I believe that the government should focus more on the present dillemas, and let the private companies deal with the research projects today.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you argue that private companies should fund medical research, while government should prioritise other needs and individuals lack the resources. Both sides of the choice are addressed, and the examples about Philippine schools and researchers with limited resources are relevant. However, the first body paragraph focuses heavily on education and does not fully explain why this makes private funding for medical research preferable. The second paragraph gives a clearer rationale, but the claim that companies have sufficient funds is asserted rather than supported with a specific example or explanation of how funding would benefit research. Develop the link between each reason and your position more explicitly, and acknowledge how private funding could be made accountable to public health needs. The response meets the stated length requirement; eight words copied from the task prompt were not counted.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons, and the conclusion restates your position. Sequencing is generally easy to follow, and signposts such as “For instance,” “In addition,” and “In conclusion” help readers identify the stages of the argument. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent arrangement and shows some of the stronger progression associated with the next level. However, connections within paragraphs are occasionally mechanical, and some references are unclear: “these kinds of projects” could refer more precisely to medical research, while “this” in “capable of doing so” has a broad antecedent. The conclusion also introduces the idea of future medicines without developing it earlier. Use more precise referencing and make each paragraph’s supporting details build directly toward its main claim.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the topic, including relevant terms such as “medical research projects,” “allocated,” “resources,” and “financially assist.” Some less common choices show an attempt to express ideas precisely, and the meaning remains clear overall. At this level, however, word choice and collocation are not consistently controlled. Phrases such as “held liable to allocate,” “focus more to,” and “enough fundings” are unnatural or inaccurate; “fundings” is also a spelling/word-form issue. There are additional spelling errors, including “possibilty,” “convenvenient,” and “dillemas.” Choose more natural academic combinations, such as “responsible for allocating,” “prioritise,” and “sufficient funding,” and proofread carefully. This would make the argument sound more precise and fluent without changing its ideas.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses beginning “because,” “although,” and “if.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the overall argument is understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with agreement, verb forms, articles, and prepositions. For example, “the one to fund” does not agree naturally with plural “companies,” “researchers who want make” needs “want to make,” and “The enrollment … tend” should use a singular verb. In “government should focus more to,” the preposition pattern is also incorrect. The final sentence’s “if private sectors will financially assist” has an awkward conditional construction. Review these patterns and check subject–verb agreement and infinitives; greater accuracy across your complex sentences would strengthen control.
