IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

I think Medical research projects should be funded and take over by government rather than privet companies and individuals.

Medical field is one of the most prominent field of a country because the whole healthcare system depends on it. Privet companies usually invests in this field to gain power and economical benefits. They might try to control medical market and government by those researches.General people do no get enough benefit from them Moreover, those inventions are mainly made to provide advantages to well off peoples.

For an example, when Corona Virus hit in 2020, Government took a huge hit because they do not know what to do. Those privet research companies also pressured government to increase the prices of medicines and surgucal mask because at that time there were scarced of those things. Therefore, government paid high price for vaccines.

If medical research are funded by government, people with low background can get health care at cheap cost. Those researches would belong to goverment. They wouldn’t have to spnend a lot of money toward new medical equipments and medicines.

Although privet funded research has some demerits, it also provides merits. Privet funded researchs are faster, and researchers get more freedom of doing their works.Their research can benefit the rich indviduals.

Research conduected by individual may not have enough information and availability and might not free from biases since its done alone.

Hence, Government funded research also comes with demerits, many countries are corrupted so the medical research also might not bias free and nepotism free.

Still, in my opinion Goverment funded research has more liability.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear overall preference for government funding, and you address the alternatives by mentioning private companies and individual researchers. Relevant reasons include public access to affordable healthcare, commercial influence over prices, and the possibility of faster research under private funding. However, the position is not fully developed: the COVID-19 example makes a broad claim about companies pressuring governments and vaccine costs without explaining or supporting it, and the benefits of individual research are only briefly mentioned. The conclusion repeats your preference but does not draw together the main reasons. To strengthen the response, explain each key point with a clearer cause-and-effect link and a specific, credible example, while comparing the funding options more directly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an opening position, discussion of private funding, a paragraph on government funding, consideration of advantages and disadvantages, and a concluding view. Connectors such as “Moreover,” “Although,” and “Hence” show an attempt to guide the reader. However, progression between ideas is sometimes abrupt. The COVID-19 example moves quickly from shortages to companies raising prices and then to government vaccine costs, without making the links clear. The paragraph beginning “Although private funded research…” also shifts from benefits to individual research and government corruption, so several distinct points are crowded together. Use clearer paragraph divisions and develop one main idea at a time; make references such as “those researches” more precise so readers can follow what each point refers to.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “healthcare system,” “medical research,” “vaccines,” “biases,” and “nepotism,” and you attempt to express distinctions between public and private funding. However, the range is limited and several inaccurate word choices or spellings make parts of the argument harder to understand. Examples include “economical benefits” for financial gain, “well off peoples,” and “researchs.” The repeated use of “privet” and “government” also reduces precision, while phrases such as “government took a huge hit” are vague in this context. Build a more accurate set of collocations for research funding and public health, and check spelling and word forms carefully. More precise vocabulary would help you explain the consequences of each funding model.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “If medical research are funded by government…” and a concessive opening with “Although.” These attempts show some range, but errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence boundaries are frequent enough to make several sentences difficult to follow. For example, “companies usually invests” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “If medical research are funded” does not maintain agreement between the subject and verb. Some sentences also run together, as in the section beginning “General people do no get enough benefit…” Practise checking each sentence for a clear subject and verb, and use full stops to separate complete ideas. Greater control of these patterns would make your reasoning easier to understand.
