IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Projects that help progress the health care system are important, as a growing number of people are struggling medicaly. However, these researches are placing financial burden on those who are funding them. Because of this many companies that are privately owned are choosing to fund these projects themselfs. Even though this helps with the financial situation of the scientists, I believe that governments should carry the financial burden as the projects will help society as a whole in a long term.
The most compelling argument for the view that the governments should pay the expenses, is that individuals should be able to conduct the projects without looking for private companies for sponsorships. This is mainly because when the sponsoring is done by private companies, they tend to want decent amount of shares if the researches end up successful. Because of this, many scientists who are unable to fund their own projects decide to not accept funding from these companies as they want to own the research themselfs. Consequently, some research projects tend end before they are finished, as the scientists have no money to conduct them.
Furthermore, the governments should allocate fundings to the progress of health care system and these projects alongside them. With the widespread need of better health care, more fundings should be allocated to this issue. If the authorities sponsored medical projects, more scientists would be able to conduct their researches. This would most likely result in better health care, as uncured deseases could be cured, as cure would be found. For instance, new ways by which brain tumor could be cured, may be reseached if the government allocated resources for the research. Because of this, I believe that if the goverment funded the medical projects, society would be able to access better health care.
To conclude, I believe that authorities should be the ones who are carrying the financial burden of medical research projects as it would strongly benefit society as a whole.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you argue that governments should fund medical research because its benefits extend to society. You also explain a relevant concern about private sponsorship, namely that companies may seek a share of successful research, and give a medical example involving brain tumours. These points address the question, but the comparison among government, private companies and individuals is not fully developed. The discussion of individuals is brief, and the claim that scientists may abandon projects because they want to retain ownership needs clearer explanation or support. The example is also hypothetical rather than specific. Develop these points with a concrete example and explain more precisely how public funding would address the problems you identify.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into a clear introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the progression from concerns about private sponsorship to the case for government funding is easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “Consequently” and “To conclude” help signal the stages of the argument. Within paragraphs, however, some connections are repetitive or not fully explicit: “Because of this” appears several times, and the relationship between scientists wanting to own research and projects ending is not clearly established. The second body paragraph also repeats the claim that public funding would improve health care without adding much new development. Use a wider range of referencing and transitions, and make each sentence build directly on the preceding point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “financial burden,” “sponsorship,” “allocate” and “uncured diseases,” which helps communicate the main argument. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “benefit society as a whole.” However, several word-choice and collocation problems reduce precision: “these researches” is not natural in this context, “fundings” is generally uncountable, and “carry the financial burden” is less suitable than “bear the cost.” Spelling errors such as “medicaly,” “themselfs,” “deseases” and “reseached” are noticeable. Aim to use accurate, natural collocations and check spelling carefully; this would make your vocabulary more controlled and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses beginning “Even though,” “as” and “if.” Most of the argument remains understandable, and the conditional sentence about government funding shows an attempt to express a possible result. Some grammatical errors persist, however. For example, “the projects tend end” is missing “to,” and “a cure would be found” would need an article in the sentence “as cure would be found.” There are also agreement and article issues in phrases such as “the progress of health care system” and “brain tumor could be cured.” Review infinitive patterns, articles and singular/plural agreement, and punctuate introductory clauses consistently. Greater accuracy across these structures would strengthen the response.
