IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
At present, several medical research projects are funded by private companies. I think that research should be carried out not only by private companies but also by the government or individuals.
Several private companies spend a lot of money to make new medicines. Their researchers spend much of their lives working to build a proper medical system. For this reason, only mega-giant private companies can spend enough money and provide enough researchers to develop a proper medicine for patients. Sometimes, even the government does not have the capability to invest such an amount of resources. For instance, a nation like ours has been suffering from a poor government system in the medical sector. This is why many private companies in our country invest a lot of manpower to develop a proper medical system.
On the other hand, there are some private companies that research harmful medicines and make a lot of profit from it. So, in this regard, the government needs to play a great role. They should start research to see if this medicine is really beneficial or not. The government needs to test it in their own labs before distrubuting amon general people. At recent time, many individual companies seem to play the same role in protecting our people. They launched a project recently to test new medicines. This is a non-profit project, but they continue to help our poor people, morever they give them free medicine to save their lives.
In conclusion, it is clear that we need both private companies and government or individuals to build a better medical system to research a proper and beneficial medicine. If we avoid one of these, the other two will become corrupted and research only for their benefits.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you argue that medical research should involve private companies as well as government and individuals, and you give reasons for each role. The discussion of private firms’ resources and the government’s responsibility to check medicines is relevant, while the example of a non-profit project adds support. However, some points are less fully explained. For example, the claim that excluding one group would make the others “corrupted” is broad and needs a clearer explanation. The role of individuals is also not developed as distinctly as the roles of companies and government. To strengthen the response, explain how each group contributes and support the final claim with a specific example. The response meets the required length; eight words copied from the task prompt were not counted.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting contrasting considerations, and a conclusion. “On the other hand” signals a shift effectively, and the main ideas are generally easy to follow. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical or unclear. In the second body paragraph, the move from harmful medicines to government testing and then to “individual companies” is abrupt, and “they” does not clearly identify who is being discussed. The conclusion repeats the central position but does not bring the separate arguments together in a precise way. Improve cohesion by grouping each actor’s role clearly, using explicit references instead of ambiguous pronouns, and making the links between examples and claims more direct.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “medical research,” “invest,” “manpower,” “non-profit project,” and “beneficial.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “play a great role.” However, several choices are repetitive or imprecise: “proper medical system” appears more than once, and “mega-giant private companies” is unnatural. Some word forms and spellings also reduce accuracy, including “distrubuting,” “amon,” and “morever.” Aim for more precise collocations and avoid repeating general phrases such as “a lot of.” Proofreading spelling and choosing conventional expressions would make your meaning more fluent and professional without changing your argument.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including reason clauses such as “This is why…” and a conditional structure in “If we avoid one of these…”. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “They launched a project recently” has an unclear subject, and “the other two will become corrupted and research only for their benefits” has an awkward, incomplete structure. The sentence beginning “For this reason” also combines several claims in a way that would benefit from clearer clause boundaries. Work on making subjects explicit, maintaining parallel structure, and checking verb patterns and punctuation. These changes would improve control while preserving the range of sentence forms you already attempt.
