IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the contemporary society, various medical research projects are sponsored by private organization. I strongly believe that research projects should be carried out by the government because it is sole responsibilty of the goverment to invest in healthcare projects given the taxes payed by the citizen.

To begin with healthcare is the fundamental right of people of the country. Research in the field of medicine carries paramount importance because it is essential for the advancement of health care. It is the duty of government to allocate funds in the medical field. It is the utmost responsibility of the government to improve health of the people of thier country through medical research. For instance, most of the revolution we see in the field of medicine is through years of research.

Another reason is that research in private companies has become a business for people. They take large amount of money from people to have their name published in their research paper. Hence, there is no transparency. Citizens pay huge amount of taxes to the government on everything. There should be separate percentage of budget reserved for research and advancement of medicine. For example, in the USA, the advancement in the health care department is through the investment of the government in research in this area.

In conclusion, although various private companies are doing various research projects, they still lack trust from the common people. It is the responsibilty of the government to reserve funds for research as they take significant amount of taxes from the individuals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you believe medical research should be funded by government, and you maintain this view in the conclusion. You give relevant reasons, including healthcare as a public responsibility and concerns about private companies’ commercial motives, and you include examples. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, the claim that private companies take money to have their names published is unclear and needs a more convincing explanation of how this affects research quality or access to treatment. The USA example is also broad and does not identify a specific programme or outcome. Develop these points with clearer cause-and-effect reasoning and more precise supporting evidence.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “Another reason,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow. This meets the lower-band expectations and shows some features of stronger organisation. However, connections within paragraphs are occasionally mechanical, and some references are unclear. For example, “most of the revolution we see” does not specify which medical advances you mean, while “Hence, there is no transparency” needs a clearer link to the preceding claim. Use more precise references and connect each example explicitly to the point it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “medical research,” “fundamental right,” “allocate funds,” and “advancement of medicine.” These choices communicate your main ideas, and terms such as “paramount importance” show an attempt to use less common language. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, however: “research carries paramount importance” would be more natural as “research is of paramount importance,” and “their name published in their research paper” does not clearly express your intended meaning. Spelling errors such as “responsibilty,” “goverment,” “payed,” and “thier” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural collocations and proofread spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause in “because it is essential for the advancement of health care” and a concessive opening in the conclusion. Most sentences remain understandable, and errors rarely obscure your meaning. Some grammatical and punctuation problems persist. For example, the opening sentence needs an article and plural agreement (“In contemporary society, various medical research projects are sponsored by private organisations”), and “It is the sole responsibility” needs an article. Several sentences also need commas after introductory phrases, as in “To begin with, healthcare…” There is some awkward sentence construction in “They take large amount of money…,” which would benefit from clearer grammatical framing. Review articles, agreement, and punctuation.
