Student answer (Band 7.0)

The thought of encouraging younger people to practice volunteer service in their community during their leisure time is widely accepted. I completely agree with this view because unpaid social service not only helps them acquire life skills, but also instills a great sense of civic responsibility.

To commence with, the dominant reason behind encouraging community service in youngsters is that it helps them gain critical skills such as communication and interpersonal skills. Since while doing community service, they come across people from a variety of backgrounds, it gives them valuable exposure which can not be learned in any classroom or home. While performing social service they also get an insight of different fields and may find their field of interest in which they can pursue future academics. For instance, youth volunteering at a local hospital will get an opportunity to get immense exposure in healthcare which helps them to figure out if they want to take medicine as a profession.

Furthermore, serving the community fosters social responsibility in the younger generation. This is because they observe the challenges faced by the society and develop an empathy towards the citizens. They learn how the society can progress by selfless contributions of the members and start prioritizing the actions which benefit the society as a whole. Undoubtedly, this experience seeds the desire to uplift them as an individual and the society as well.

To conclude, in my opinion as well, the practical experience which is gained and the social responsibility which is learnt by doing unpaid community service in the free time makes it a strongly recommended practice in the younger population.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for an opinion on who should fund medical research (private companies, individuals, or government), but the essay discusses the benefits of youth volunteering in the community. As the response fails to address the specific task question entirely, it cannot be assessed for task achievement in a meaningful way regarding the prompt. While the essay is internally coherent and well-structured, it does not respond to the instructions provided. Consequently, it must be penalised heavily for failing to address the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is well-structured with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Ideas are logically sequenced, and cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', and 'To conclude' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct point. Despite the content being irrelevant to the prompt, the internal organisation and flow of the text are strong, demonstrating a good grasp of how to structure an academic essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate for an academic essay. The student uses a range of relevant terms such as 'interpersonal skills', 'civic responsibility', 'selfless contributions', and 'valuable exposure'. The word choice is natural and precise, and there are no significant errors in collocation or spelling that impede communication. While the vocabulary is not highly sophisticated or 'uncommon', it is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly and effectively throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The student demonstrates a good command of grammar, using a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Examples include 'Since while doing community service, they come across people...' and 'This is because they observe the challenges...'. There are very few grammatical errors, and punctuation is generally accurate. The control over complex structures is consistent, and the writing is fluent. The errors present are minor and do not interfere with the clarity of the message.
