IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In my opinion, the fund for the medical research project doesn't matter from where it is coming but it can vary from person to department to sectors.
If i talk about the private companies it is clear that nowadays everyone wants their own name at the top one reason in my opinion is that, that the private companies fund medical research projects because they do it as a sponsor. So their name will displayed at the project site but it's not a bad thing as they are funding them.
However, if there is a question about the government then i think that government should fund them as they are the officials of the country and if they fund the medical research project than its official there is no chance of scam. Government should pay attention to all the medical research project and fund them as they are for the betterment of people.
However, if there is are concerns about the individuals then this is not a better approach at all as they are planning to improve and find new ways of diagnosis. So how they should fund the programe as they are planning for the well being of people.
To, conclude i can say that if one private company is funding the medical research project than its not a problematic approach at all. Since they are giving funds and as we talk about the government i think that this is the best approach as selected from all three options that are given above.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing private companies, government, and individuals. However, the development of ideas is limited and somewhat repetitive. The argument regarding individuals is particularly unclear, as the text struggles to explain why individuals might or might not be suitable funders. The position is stated but lacks depth, and the reasoning remains superficial throughout. To improve, you should provide concrete examples—such as mentioning specific pharmaceutical companies or government health initiatives—to support your claims. The conclusion attempts to summarize your view, but the overall structure lacks the analytical depth required for a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often repetitive or mechanical. For example, the phrase 'However, if there is' is used twice in succession, and the transition between ideas feels abrupt. The logical progression is hindered by sentences that do not flow naturally into one another. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases (e.g., 'furthermore,' 'consequently,' 'in contrast') and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that connects back to your main argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but remains quite basic and repetitive. You rely on simple terms like 'fund,' 'money,' and 'betterment,' which limits your ability to express complex ideas with precision. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'the fund for the medical research project doesn't matter from where it is coming.' To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more academic vocabulary related to the topic, such as 'financial backing,' 'public sector,' 'private enterprise,' or 'scientific advancement,' and ensure that your word choices are more precise and varied.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'their name will displayed'), incorrect use of articles, and punctuation errors. The sentence structure is often repetitive, relying heavily on 'if' clauses. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors like missing auxiliary verbs or incorrect verb tenses. Increasing the variety of your sentence structures, such as using passive voice or relative clauses more accurately, would also help improve your score.
