Student answer (Band 7.0)
Nowadays, many medical research projects are getting funding from private companies, which were previously funded by either the government or individuals. In this essay, I will discuss this argument from all the aspects, and present my view in favor of " medical research projects should be funded by government".
Medical research projects are of great importance in terms of understanding the disease mechanism and proposing therapeutic strategies. In order to conduct an effective and efficient research project, it requires a thefty amount. There are several ways to support research projects, such as self funding, financial assistance from a government sector, or from a private company. Currently, private companies are more interested to finance medical research projects than the government, which i believe is disadvantageous for the society as well as for the government.
Following the funding from a private company, medical research project will be focused more of the way to make money rather than public's health. Additionally, private companies give funds on the conditions, which involves; the innovation can not be patent or published by the researcher, who has originally worked on it. Finally, research should be transparent about the limitations or disadvantages of the innovation, but the private companies will show one sided image for their benefit.
In contrast, the government will consider the surveys about the real health issues and fund the medical projects which are focused on addressing them at the time of the need rather than financial benefits. Furthermore, public health is responsibility of the government authorities, so the funding should also be provided by them.
In conclusion, government funded medical research projects are more beneficial for the public's health. While private companies will merely consider this point and consider on projects which will financially benefit them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The essay addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have identified the core tension between profit-driven private research and public-interest government research. The ideas are relevant and supported by logical arguments, such as the issue of patent restrictions and the focus on public health. To reach a higher band, you could provide a more concrete example, such as mentioning a specific type of disease or a historical instance where government funding led to a breakthrough that private companies ignored. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance, ensuring the response is well-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as the disadvantages of private funding and the benefits of government intervention. You use cohesive devices like 'Additionally', 'Finally', and 'In contrast' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the sentence 'Following the funding from a private company...' is a bit awkward. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring they connect ideas more naturally would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'therapeutic strategies', 'innovation', and 'transparent'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For instance, 'thefty amount' is incorrect; 'hefty sum' or 'significant financial investment' would be more appropriate. Additionally, 'focused more of the way' should be 'focused more on the way'. While these errors do not impede communication, they limit your ability to reach the higher bands. Focusing on precise collocations and avoiding informal phrasing will help improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the innovation can not be patent' (should be 'patented') and 'public health is responsibility of the government' (missing an article: 'the responsibility'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some issues with comma usage, such as the semicolon after 'involves'. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding. To improve, focus on article usage and consistent verb forms in complex sentences.
