Student answer (Band 7.0)
Medical research projects has now become one of the most fundamental thing in this society as healthcare systems are continuously developing and advances are being made. As a result of this, the are lots of financial supports and fundings provided from private companies for investment. This essay will discuss whether medical research should be carried by others like individuals or the government.
In my opinion, I believe that medical projects should be carried on to be funded by private companies. This is mainly due to financial reasons. Private companies are more likely to provide stable fundings as their main goal is to make investments with the successful project. This indicates that once they provide the funding, they would have to continue funding until the research project is successfully done or otherwise they would lose their money, so there are more possibilities of positive outcomes. Moreover, private companies have no limitations and restrictions in their use of money meaning that they are able to fund multiple projects at once. While government can only provide a fraction of their budget as there are other places for government to develop such as the public transport or making public green spaces. Additionally, individuals wouldn't be able to provide as much financial support as the companies because it is highly unlikely for a normal person with average salary to have more financial security than a company. Therefore, the main reason I believe private companies should fund the projects is due to financial reasons.
Another reason is because of the fact that government and individuals wouldn't want to take risks when funding. One of the main reasons for funding a medical research project is for investments. It is hard for government and individuals to fund multiple research projects as they are aware that many of them could fail or take long time for a positive result. So, it would be concerning for them to fund medical projects when they can fund other projects like technology.
However, on the other hand, governments providing funding can have more positive impact to the society as governments would share the outcomes of the research to the public. For example, for Covid 19, some of the governments funded the research project for vaccines and when they were successfully tested, they were provided to the public. This was more accessible to all, privileged or unprivileged, than those countries with private companies selling vaccinations. Moreover, government funding the project would be more trustable, as government not only fund project for investments but also for the safety and development of healthcare.
In conclusion, I think that medical research projects should be funded by private companies although there are possible disadvantages such as the accessibility of the outcomes and reliability.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that favors private funding while acknowledging the benefits of government involvement. The ideas are relevant and generally well-supported, such as the discussion on financial stability and risk-taking. However, the development is slightly repetitive, particularly in the second and third paragraphs, where the focus on 'investment' is reiterated without adding significant new depth. To reach a higher band, you should ensure that each paragraph introduces a distinct, fully developed argument rather than circling back to the same points. Overall, the position is consistent and the main ideas are clearly presented.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover,' 'Additionally,' and 'However, on the other hand,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the phrase 'the are lots of' in the introduction, which disrupts the flow. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the link between the conclusion and the body paragraphs could be more nuanced to better synthesize the conflicting viewpoints presented.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'financial security,' 'limitations and restrictions,' and 'accessibility.' There are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices or minor errors, such as 'medical research projects has now become' (subject-verb agreement) and 'more trustable' (the correct form is 'more trustworthy'). While you attempt to use more sophisticated language, some collocations are slightly off. To improve, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and ensuring that word forms are used correctly in context. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly throughout the essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully use complex sentences to explain your reasoning, there are frequent minor errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include 'the are lots of' instead of 'there are,' 'carried on to be funded' which is awkward phrasing, and 'government' often missing an article (e.g., 'the government'). Despite these errors, the meaning is rarely impeded, and the reader can follow your arguments without difficulty. To achieve a higher band, you should focus on subject-verb agreement, article usage, and refining your control over complex sentence structures to reduce the frequency of these small slips.
