IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Today private companies are the primary funders of researches being done in the medical sector. I firmly hold the stance that research should be largely carried by government but private companies or individuals' contributions should not be limited.

Foremost, governments have large funds and enough financial capital specifically for research purposes. Medical research requires a lot of investment for things such as equipment and salaries for the professionals carrying out the research. Private organisations or individuals have limited funds which can run out. Unsufficient financial investment means that the research can be abandoned due to funding exhaustion. This threat can be eliminated when government funds a research project as large sums of money are set aside primarily for research projects.

Additionally, the responsibility to invest in research projects that benefit people falls on the government rather than private coorporations. All lawful citizens pay taxes. These taxes are supposed to be used for public benefit. It is the obligation of government to invest in research regarding public welfare. This is why it should be expected of a government to invest in researches instead of other sources.

However, I believe that organisations or people who want to carry out any projects independently should not be discouraged but should be supported to assist in government projects. Their contributions should be viewed as "meaningful additions" to the research. I hold the view that such individuals or companies instead of carrying research independently should help and assist in government-led researches. Combining huge funds with more number of professionals can help increase efficiency and obtain desired results.

Conclusively, I am convinced that researches should be majorly government-backed. Instead of completely prohibiting research by private coorporations or individuals, they should complement research initiatives by the government.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and maintains a clear position throughout. You have provided relevant arguments regarding the financial stability of government-led research and the ethical obligation of public funding. The ideas are extended and supported, particularly in the second and third paragraphs. To reach a higher band, you could provide a more specific example of a medical research project to illustrate your point, rather than relying solely on general statements. The conclusion effectively summarises your stance, ensuring the response is well-focused on the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic, and you use cohesive devices such as 'Foremost', 'Additionally', and 'Conclusively' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there is occasional repetition of phrasing (e.g., 'research' is used very frequently). To improve, try to vary your linking words and use referencing more effectively to avoid repeating the same nouns. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'financial capital', 'exhaustion', and 'public welfare'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'Unsufficient' (should be 'Insufficient') and 'coorporations' (should be 'corporations'). Additionally, the word 'researches' is used as a countable noun, whereas 'research' is typically uncountable in this context. To achieve a higher score, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure accurate spelling of academic terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'research should be largely carried by government' (missing the article 'the') and 'more number of professionals' (should be 'a greater number of professionals'). Punctuation is generally accurate, but some sentences could be refined for better flow. The errors present do not impede communication, but they do prevent the essay from reaching the higher bands where error-free complex sentences are more frequent.
