Student answer (Band 7.0)

Nowadays, a number of medical research projects are getting funded by private companies. In my opinion, this level of research should be primarily funded by the government. Though, there is no major harm in getting partial funding from a private company or an individual.

Furthermore, there are number of reasons why a medical research project should not be funded entirely by a private company or an individual. In a situation where the project is financed by a private entity the entire projects ownership can be held by that entity. It will be difficult for the government to keep a track of research advancements until it is officially patented by the funding body. The much bigger problem here will be the moral of the researcher will be highly affected. they might struggle to get the credit of their hard work and intelligence if they lack in proper documentation. In addition, the research documents may not be available for common people or other researchers.

However, if such projects are funded by the government it solves majority problems of ownership, the scholar gets it's due and acknowledgment and the research papers and documents remain available for the common public. In this scenario, if any other researcher wishes to take ahead the project, they are not required to start all over again. Moreover, There are government schemes that an individual or small start-up can benefit from. This can support their initial funding and help them get their patents register for free. However, in exceptional situations a private entity and government can together fund a project where ownerhsip and other legalities are discussed and documented before hand.

To conclude, the best interest of people lies in a governemnet funded research project. Though, there is no harm in getting funding from a private company or indivivudal to some extent as a collabration.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a preference for government funding while acknowledging the role of private entities. The position is consistent throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the 'moral of the researcher' is vague and could have been better explained with a concrete example of how private ownership might stifle academic freedom or transparency. While the ideas are relevant, they lack the depth required for a higher band score, as the explanation of the benefits of government funding remains somewhat repetitive and general.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader through the argument. While the progression of ideas is generally logical, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise (e.g., 'it solves majority problems'). The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure supports the development of the argument, though the flow could be improved with more varied linking phrases to connect sentences within paragraphs more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their opinion clearly. There is an attempt to use some topic-specific terminology like 'patented', 'funding body', and 'acknowledgment'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'moral of the researcher' (likely meaning 'morale') and 'take ahead the project' (should be 'take the project forward'). These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. More precise academic vocabulary would enhance the quality of the argument.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('the common public', 'a government funded'), subject-verb agreement issues ('the scholar gets it's due'—should be 'its'), and punctuation errors (e.g., 'Moreover, There are...'). The use of complex structures is present but not always accurate. To improve, the writer should focus on proofreading for basic errors in articles and possessive pronouns, as these frequent minor slips detract from the overall control of grammar.
