Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Nowadays the buyers prefer to shop domestic products instead of purchasing international products. The driving factors behind this shift are acknowledging the concept of environmental stability and an urge to support local businesses. This is a constructive development as it is eco friendly and promotes economic stability.

One of the underpinning is that shopping local produce reduces the need of international export and shortens the routes of transport. Therefore, the carbon emission associated with the transportation and the waste associated with packaging declines proportionately, which reduces environmental footprint. In addition, this practice creates more employment and boosts local economies. To expound, buying local products flourishes businesses in the neighbourhood and ensures the money circulates within the nation rather than flowing to international companies. To exemplify, as per the report published by York University, in 2025, after the introduction of tariffs by the US government, the drive to shop local goods in Ontario, accelerated provincial revenue by 25%. Hence the above example clearly illustrates the profound impact of the trend.

To answer the second question, it is undoubtedly a positive development. One of the contributing factors is the economic stability which is encouraged by such mindful practices. To elaborate, buying locally fosters economic resilience by reducing the dependence on the global supply chain and fluctuating market trends which makes a nation self-dependent. Furthermore, it significantly drops the overall pollution associated with the export of the overseas goods, and consequently, becomes an eco-friendly route for the shopping industry.

To sum up, the phenomena has brought a mammoth change in the consumer practices with the desired outcomes of expansion of local businesses and reducing carbon emissions associated with transport and packaging. To my perspective it is a favourable change which is widely welcomed by both the consumers and the businesses.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for an opinion on who should fund medical research (private companies, individuals, or government). However, the essay discusses the benefits of shopping for domestic products instead of international ones. Because the response fails to address the task question entirely, it cannot be assessed for task achievement in relation to the prompt. According to IELTS criteria, a response that is clearly off-topic must be penalized heavily in this category, as it does not address the prompt's requirements at all.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

Despite being off-topic, the essay itself is internally coherent. It uses logical paragraphing and clear cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'To expound', and 'To sum up'. The progression of ideas within the context of the 'shopping local' argument is logical and easy to follow. Each paragraph has a clear central theme, and the transition between the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion is smooth. The use of referencing is generally clear, and the structure of the argument is well-organized, even though the subject matter is irrelevant to the prompt.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

The vocabulary used is quite strong and demonstrates a good range. Phrases such as 'underpinning', 'carbon emission', 'economic resilience', and 'fluctuating market trends' show an ability to use topic-specific language effectively. There is a good control of collocation and word choice throughout the text. While the content is irrelevant to the prompt, the lexical quality itself is sophisticated and demonstrates a level of proficiency that would be appropriate for a higher band score if the content were relevant.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures. There is a mix of simple and complex sentences, and the grammar is generally accurate. Minor errors exist, such as 'the phenomena has' (should be 'the phenomenon has') and 'To my perspective' (should be 'From my perspective'), but these do not impede communication. The control of punctuation and sentence construction is consistent, and the majority of sentences are error-free. The grammatical range is sufficient to convey complex ideas clearly.
