Student answer (Band 6.5)

These days, every time you turn on the television or flick through the paper of newspaper, you learn about that private companies not only in developed but also in developing countries own so many research projects. What is the most effective method of dealing with the rising demand of conducting research in our society? Some people believe that only the government based projects are reliable and some believe that individual or private companies are second to none. I completely agree with the idea of projects carried by private companies.

Firstly, project's success not only depends on the equipment or tools used in project but also on scientists and success comes from anywhere whether it's a government funded agency, private or individual. A good funding by private institution is enough to hire brilliant scientists, precise and accurate equipment, co-operating environment. these are the things that really matters. Let's take good funded private hospital and research center as an example where doctors are enough capable to conduct researches and discover different important things. In other words, resources as well as competency play a significant role.

Secondly, most of the government agencies that were not doing great when owned by private company, not only their services improved but also it achieved the confidence of public. For instance, PIA is considered the bad airline owned by government after owned by private company, it's services improved and penicillin, that was discovered individually. There wasn't any funding by government or private agencies perhaps, it was breakthrough discovery. So, it is not definite that project's success merely comes from the government institute who has high budget.

What's more, the government offers high budget and big projects. So, it is highly likely that these projects are more innovative and scientist's first priority is always to work with government because of more facilities and better supervision. Government can buy expensive equipment which is for most part, difficult for private company to own.

In conclusion, high-tech private companies are doing great job. Their projects are equally important as the government. Although, Individual and private projects are not highly-funded but we should not ignore it on the basis of funding. As, success and discoveries come from anywhere whether it is owned by private or government.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the role of private companies in medical research. However, the position is somewhat contradictory. While you state you 'completely agree' with private funding, you later dedicate a paragraph to the benefits of government funding, which weakens the clarity of your stance. The ideas are relevant but lack depth; for instance, the example of the airline (PIA) is not directly related to medical research, making the argument less persuasive. To improve, ensure your position is consistent throughout and provide specific, relevant examples that directly support your claims regarding medical research.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which is a positive feature. However, the flow between ideas is sometimes disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is occasionally mechanical or misused, such as the transition 'In other words' which does not accurately link the preceding and following sentences. Additionally, some sentences are fragmented or lack clear logical progression, particularly in the second paragraph where the shift from airline services to penicillin is abrupt. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus will enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'innovative', 'competency', and 'breakthrough'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'government based projects' (should be 'government-funded') and 'doctors are enough capable' (should be 'sufficiently capable'). Some phrasing is repetitive, and there are minor errors in word formation that occasionally hinder the precision of your argument. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that your vocabulary is used in the correct grammatical context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'these are the things that really matters'), missing articles, and awkward sentence construction (e.g., 'government agencies that were not doing great when owned by private company'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences and misused commas. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the overall fluency of the text. Focusing on basic sentence structure and proofreading for subject-verb agreement will help improve your score.
