Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many medical research projects are funded by private companies today. Some people think private companies are good for research, but some think government or individuals should do it. In my opinion, government is the best for medical research because they can help all sick people.Private companies only want money and profit. They make new medicine and sell it for very high price in this chart Poor people cannot buy this expensive medicine. This is a very big problem. If government does research, medicine will be cheap or free. So government must give a lot of money for medical research.Individuals cannot do medical research because it needs a lot of money and big laboratories. One single person does not have enough money. So individuals are not good for this work. Government has many money from taxes. They can build big hospitals and help many scientists to do research. In conclusion, private companies only want money and individuals do not have money. Therefore, government should carry out and fund all medical research projects. This is very good for everyone in the world because health is important.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 183 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas. While you clearly state your position that government funding is preferable, the arguments are underdeveloped and repetitive. You mention that private companies seek profit and individuals lack resources, but these points are not expanded upon with sufficient depth or specific examples. To improve, you must elaborate on your reasoning, perhaps by discussing the ethical implications of profit-driven research or the long-term societal benefits of government-led initiatives. The current length prevents a fully developed response, leading to a lower score in this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay has a basic structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the progression of ideas is somewhat mechanical. You rely on simple transition words like 'So' and 'Therefore' to link sentences. The paragraphing is present, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs is limited by the brevity of the text. To reach a higher band, you should use a wider variety of cohesive devices (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in contrast') and ensure that ideas flow more naturally between sentences rather than appearing as a list of simple statements.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is functional but basic. You repeat words such as 'money', 'research', and 'medicine' frequently, which limits the range of your expression. There is little attempt to use less common or academic vocabulary. For example, instead of 'very high price', you could use 'prohibitive costs'. To improve, focus on incorporating topic-specific vocabulary related to medical research and economics, and try to use synonyms to avoid repetition. The current range is adequate for basic communication but lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher band scores.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay consists mostly of simple sentences. While there are few major errors that impede communication, there is a lack of complex grammatical structures. You have some minor errors, such as 'Government has many money' (should be 'a lot of money' or 'significant funding') and 'in this chart' (which seems irrelevant to the prompt). To improve, you should practice using complex sentences with subordinate clauses (e.g., 'Although private companies are efficient, their primary focus on profit often neglects the needs of the impoverished'). Increasing the variety of your sentence structures will significantly improve your score.
