Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is undeniable that medical research plays a vital role in improving global health and extending life expectancy. In this regards, many medical research projects are funded by private companies while individuals and governments also contributed significantly to this field, I Believe that government should bear the primary responsibility for funding and in favour of latter point of view discuss in forthcoming fragments before reaching to a logical conclusion.

To commence with, private corporations drive innovation through investments in medical research. Firstly, private companies earn better salaries which are used for funding to increase efficiency. to explain it, wealthy individuals often establish foundations for some diseases that help poor people for better treatment. Secondly, private companies prioritize low income people by providing vaccines and medicine which are affordable. Similarly, another reason is that these companies had also social responsibilities towards local people and so on. To elaborate it, it directly contributes to the development of the society and economy which directly contributes to the better health.

However, governments funded research prioritizes public welfare over financial gain. When state bodies control medical research, projects can be directed towards urgent public health, crises and rare health. For instance, basic scientific research such as initial mapping of the human genome rely heavily on public funding. Moreover, government has a power of apply rules and regulations to be follow by people while local individuals pay money in the form of taxes so its responsibility of government to carried funding research by them.

To conclude, although their are several benefits of funded by private companies such as better investments and foundations organized by these companies can never be neglected at any cost yet according to me medical research projects ought to be carried by governments for better development of the economy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that government funding should be prioritized. However, the development of ideas is somewhat inconsistent. While the argument for government funding is logical, the section on private companies is confusing; for instance, the claim that 'private companies earn better salaries' is unclear and does not directly support the argument regarding research funding. The ideas are relevant but occasionally lack depth or clarity, particularly in the second paragraph where the link between corporate social responsibility and medical research outcomes is vague. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point directly reinforces your central thesis with clear, logical explanations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To commence with,' 'However,' and 'To conclude,' which help guide the reader through the argument. However, there is some mechanical use of these devices, and some transitions are slightly awkward, such as 'in favour of latter point of view discuss in forthcoming fragments.' Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the overall progression of ideas would benefit from more sophisticated linking words and a more natural integration of supporting evidence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'life expectancy,' 'public welfare,' and 'human genome.' However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and awkward phrasing, such as 'carried by' instead of 'conducted by' or 'funded by,' and 'the power of apply rules.' Some collocations are also slightly unnatural, such as 'carried funding research.' While the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main points, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms, prepositions, and article usage (e.g., 'governments funded research,' 'their are several benefits,' 'responsibility of government to carried funding'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences and comma splices. These errors are noticeable and occasionally distract the reader, though they do not fundamentally impede communication. To improve, the writer should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice constructions.
