Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response is significantly under-length, reaching only 94 words against the 250-word requirement. Consequently, the task is not fully addressed. The introduction attempts to set up an argument, but the body paragraph is cut off mid-sentence, preventing any meaningful development of ideas or a clear position. Because the response is incomplete, it fails to provide the necessary reasons or examples required by the prompt. To improve, you must ensure you complete the essay by providing at least two fully developed body paragraphs and a conclusion, ensuring you meet the minimum word count to allow for a full exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay shows a basic attempt at paragraphing and uses some cohesive devices such as 'To commence with' and 'Firstly'. However, because the text is incomplete and ends abruptly, there is no overall logical progression or coherent structure. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the flow of ideas is interrupted by the premature ending. To reach a higher band, you need to ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence, supporting details, and a logical transition to the next point, culminating in a cohesive conclusion that summarizes your main arguments.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is somewhat repetitive and limited. Phrases like 'different people have different opinions' and 'medical research projects' are used, but there is little evidence of a wider range of academic vocabulary. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'earn much benefits' instead of 'gain significant benefits'. To improve, you should focus on using more precise academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition. Expanding your vocabulary related to the topic of funding and research would also help in conveying your ideas more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains several grammatical errors, such as 'private companies spent funds' (should be 'spend') and 'the need new tools' (missing verb). The sentence structures are relatively simple, and the abrupt ending makes it difficult to assess your ability to use complex structures effectively. There are also punctuation and capitalization issues, such as the lowercase 't' at the start of the second sentence in the second paragraph. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct verb tense usage, and ensuring that your sentences are complete and grammatically sound.
