IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In recent times, private firms have increasingly funded medical research programs. Although governments, private corporations and individuals can all contribute to such research, I firmly believe that a balanced approach by the government and the private firms would be much more effective.

If the government runs the projects single-handedly, there is a higher risk of being financially burdened. This will ultimately lead to higher taxation which will put the general public under economical pressure. The collaboration of government and private firms will provide sufficient funds without any financial setbacks. To illustrate, many developing nations have adopted this approach to ensure sufficient funds for various research projects. Especially in India, at the time of covid, the search for its vaccine was carried out by both the public and private sector.

Another major concern while carrying out medical research programs is keeping confidentiality of all the resources and technologies being used. By the involvment of trusted private firms and the government this matter is resolved. Often all the activities carried out in the research are monitered which leaves no room for corruption in the code of conduct. Furthermore, when goverment participates in a research project, the security and trust of general public is also ensured. There is often no question about the information being wrongfully used, which can be doubted in individual research fundings.

In conclusion, the public and the private sector can work togather on medical projects to attain multiple benefits which include elevating financial stress, keeping confidentiality of reports and earning the confidence of citizens in those projects.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in favor of a collaborative approach between government and private sectors. The ideas are relevant and supported by a specific example regarding vaccine development in India. However, the development of the argument regarding 'confidentiality' is somewhat thin and could have been expanded with more depth to reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. To improve, ensure that each body paragraph provides more detailed analysis or a second supporting example to fully flesh out the arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'To illustrate', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. The progression of ideas is smooth, and referencing is generally clear. While the flow is good, the transition between the financial argument and the confidentiality argument could be slightly more sophisticated to enhance the overall coherence of the piece.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning with some flexibility. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'financially burdened', 'collaboration', and 'confidentiality'. However, there are some minor spelling errors ('involvment', 'monitered', 'goverment', 'togather') that slightly detract from the overall quality. The range is adequate for the task, but the use of more precise academic collocations would elevate the score. The student demonstrates a good grasp of general academic register, but needs to focus on proofreading for spelling accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a reasonable level of control over grammar, and the meaning is never obscured by errors. However, there are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'the search for its vaccine was carried out' (which is slightly awkward) and 'the security and trust of general public' (missing an article). While the student attempts complex structures, the frequency of error-free sentences is moderate. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more variety in complex sentence forms and ensure articles and prepositions are used with greater precision.
