IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Yes, it is true that many of the current research are being funded but the private individuals rather than the government.

But personally i think that these research should be carried out by the government, i accept that government sometimes delay or restrict some medical research projects due to many factors, but if these medical projects led by individuals such as private companies, it might result in a bad catastrophe.

We do not know what their hidden motives are and lengths they might take to reach these goal. I do not portray all of the private companies are bad but even a single one can lead to a disaster waiting to be happen.

Lets take an example from fiction, in this fantasy world lets look at genre of Zombies, most of these zombies movie starts with multinational organization which are trying to develop cure for some untreatable disease but instead they open the Pandora box by accidently creating a new virus that turns the human into a being without a mind and controlled by this virus, to replicate and grow it uses the human to attack and turn other humans which leads to a zombie outbreak all over the world.

They might have had good intentions but the outcome was an unexpected variable which they could not control.

This might even happen in reality if the this so called private industries try to be a God.

As the movie they may have good intentions and better funds and resources than government, but it is better to contain, control and continue the research under the government.

The government has strict regulations which the private individuals can not break even if they want to, government has vast resources which help in contain a project gone wrong.

Actually it is much better if they form a partnership monitor the project together.

So in the end, it is not definite that government better they have their drawbacks too but we see at big-picture government has better chances of survival.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear preference for government-led research. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. The reliance on a fictional example (zombie movies) to support a serious argument about medical research is inappropriate for an Academic Task 2 essay, as it lacks the necessary academic rigour and real-world relevance. While the student attempts to contrast private and government funding, the arguments remain somewhat superficial. To reach a higher band, you should provide concrete, real-world examples or logical arguments regarding ethical oversight, profit motives, or public health priorities rather than relying on pop-culture tropes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the argument. However, the progression of ideas is occasionally disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical, and some transitions between sentences feel abrupt. For instance, the jump from the zombie example to the conclusion is quite sudden. The referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the phrase 'as the movie they may have good intentions', where the connection between the fictional scenario and the real-world argument is not smoothly integrated. More varied linking words would improve the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. There are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'bad catastrophe' (which is redundant) and 'the this so called private industries'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic descriptors. To improve, you should focus on using more precise academic terminology related to research ethics, funding models, and regulatory frameworks, and ensure that your word choices are natural and contextually appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader's flow. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('many of the current research are', 'government has better chances'), missing articles ('the government', 'a disaster'), and punctuation errors. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. You should focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that articles are used correctly before nouns.
