Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 193 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas. While you attempt to state a position that the government should fund medical research, the arguments are underdeveloped and lack focus. The example regarding your brother's cutlery business is irrelevant to the topic of medical research funding, which prevents you from fully addressing the prompt. To improve, ensure that all examples directly support your main argument and provide a more comprehensive discussion of why government funding is preferable to private or individual funding. You must also ensure the essay is of sufficient length to allow for full development of your points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay shows some attempt at paragraphing, but the logical progression is weak. The transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is abrupt. Cohesive devices are used in a very mechanical and sometimes inaccurate way, such as 'Initialy , i talk about first point' and 'After that'. Referencing is often unclear, and the lack of a concluding paragraph leaves the argument unresolved. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words more naturally and ensure each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that relates directly to the prompt. The overall structure needs to be more cohesive to guide the reader through your argument effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'remedial project' instead of 'medical research' and 'Private galaxy's' instead of 'Private companies'. The use of 'payed' (a spelling error for 'paid') and 'buisness' (spelling error for 'business') indicates a need for more attention to basic spelling and collocation. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to express complex ideas about government policy or economic responsibility. To improve, focus on learning topic-specific vocabulary related to public services, funding, and research, and practice using these words in correct contexts.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'most corporation are run'), article usage, and sentence structure. Many sentences are fragmented or lack proper punctuation, such as the incomplete final sentence. The range of grammatical structures is very limited, relying mostly on simple sentences. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, including correct verb tenses and pluralization. Practice proofreading your work to identify and correct common errors like 'its' vs 'it is' and ensure that every sentence has a clear subject and verb.
