Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Medical research is indispensable for improving healthcare and combating lifethreatening diseases. Although private companies and indivdual researchers make meaningful contribution to scientific advancement, I firmly believe that government should play the leading role in funding and conducting medical research because they can prioritise public welfare and provide long- term financial support.
the first reason is that government are more likely to prioritise public health over commercial profit. Unlike private corporations, which often invest in projects with high financial returns, government can fund research into rare disease and preventive healthcare programmes that benifits social as a whole. durthermore, public insitutions are accountable to citizens, ensuring greater transparency and ethical oversight. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, many government and public health research, enabling millons of people to receive life- saving treatment.
Another compelling reason is that government possess the financial capacity to support long-term research projects requiring substantial investment. In contrast, individual researchers frequently lack adequate resources, while private companies may discontinue projects that fail to generate immediate profits. Moreover, government funded discoveries are generally more accessible, allowing hospitals and universities to utilise research findings for the public good. For instance, numerous national health institutes collaborate with universities to develop affordable treatments that are widely available rather than restricted by commercial institutes.
In conclusion, although private enterprises and individual scientists undoubtedly contribute to medical innovation, government should remain the principal drive force behind the medical research. Their commitment to public welfare, financial stability, and aduitable accesess to healthcare makes them the most suitable organisations to lead scientific progress for the benefit of present and future generations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in favor of government-led research. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the distinction between commercial profit and public welfare. The argument is well-developed, though some points could be further extended to reach a higher band. For instance, the discussion on 'individual researchers' is mentioned but remains somewhat underdeveloped compared to the arguments regarding private companies and government. Overall, the response maintains a clear position throughout and provides sufficient justification for the chosen stance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Furthermore', 'In contrast', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to link ideas. However, there are some minor issues with referencing and mechanical flow, such as the lack of capitalization at the start of sentences (e.g., 'the first reason', 'durthermore'). While these do not impede communication, they slightly affect the overall flow and professional presentation of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task, with some good collocations like 'scientific advancement', 'public welfare', and 'life-saving treatment'. There are some spelling errors ('indivdual', 'benifits', 'insitutions', 'aduitable', 'accesess') and minor word choice inaccuracies ('drive force' instead of 'driving force'). Despite these errors, the range is sufficient to convey complex ideas clearly. To improve, the student should focus on proofreading for spelling and ensuring that less common lexical items are used with greater precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a good attempt at using complex sentences, such as 'Although private companies and individual researchers make meaningful contribution...'. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('government are', 'government possess') and capitalization. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of the main arguments. The student shows a reasonable command of grammar, but more attention to detail and consistency is required to achieve a higher band.
