Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays medical research is need much money for do it. Some people think private company should give money, other people think government should give money for this. In my opinion I think both is need to give money for research.

Firstly, private company have much money and good technology, so they can do research very fast. For example in Corona time, many company make vaccine very quick because they have money and modern equipment. This is help many peoples in world.

But there is problem also. Private company want to make profit, so they only do research about disease that make money. Other disease like rare disease, they don't want research because no profit. This is bad for poor peoples who have this disease, they cannot get help.

On other hand, government can help this problem. Government don't need profit, so they can spend money in research that important for peoples health, even this not make money. Also when government do research, they share information to public, so other doctor and scientist can use it. But private company keep it secret because they want protect business.

In conclusion, I think government and private company both is need to help in medical research. But government should more responsible because they think about people, not only about money.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the roles of private companies and the government in medical research. However, the essay fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, which significantly impacts the development of ideas. While you present a clear position, the arguments remain somewhat superficial. For instance, the point about 'rare diseases' is a good start, but it lacks depth or specific examples to fully support your argument. To improve, you should expand on your points with more detailed explanations and perhaps a more nuanced discussion on the role of individuals or non-profit organizations to ensure the task is fully addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'But', 'On other hand', and 'In conclusion' to signal transitions between ideas. However, the use of these devices is somewhat mechanical, and the flow between sentences can be repetitive. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and improve the internal cohesion of your paragraphs by using referencing (e.g., 'this approach', 'such initiatives') to connect ideas more fluidly rather than relying on simple conjunctions at the start of every sentence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task but remains quite basic. You rely on simple terms like 'much money', 'good technology', and 'bad'. While these words communicate your meaning, they lack the precision and variety expected at higher levels. There are also some minor errors in word choice, such as 'Corona time' (should be 'the COVID-19 pandemic') and 'peoples' (should be 'people'). To improve, focus on learning topic-specific collocations related to research, funding, and public health, and avoid repeating the same basic adjectives throughout your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('both is need', 'government don't need') and article usage ('in world', 'in research'). These errors are noticeable and occasionally distract the reader, though they do not completely impede communication. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically verb forms and the correct use of articles. Additionally, try to incorporate more complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses or conditional sentences, while ensuring they are grammatically accurate.
