IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Increasing number of medical research projects are sponsored by private businesses. In my opinion, the government should invest in research especially in medical field because individuals and private companies can misuse the findings and also the government can use the research for the betterment of the citizens.
The major reason to restrict the corporate companies from investing in the medical researches is that they will use this for their own benefits. To expound, the main purpose of these private investors is to make money and they may use the findings to make profit out of it. For instance, if they will be able to find treatments for diseases like HIV, they may charge patients unreasonably, making it difficult for poor people to have access to these cures. Moreover, even individuals may sell their researches for money to private companies for their own profit. Hence, in order to make sure that there will be no misuse of the new discoveries in the medical fields, individuals and private businesses should not be allowed to be a part of it.
Another reason that only the government should invest public funds to fund medical researches is public welfare. This is because if the innovations are carried with the public finances, then it can be used for the citizens. For example, the medicines and vaccines can be provided in the government hospitals at a very low price, by making it easily available to the lower class people. This will give equal access of medical treatments to everyone regardless of their financial conditions.
To conclude, in my opinion, medical research projects should only be funded by the government. In that way, the authorities can put a check on its misuse by the corporate companies and people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in favor of government-funded research. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, particularly the argument regarding the potential for corporate profit-seeking to limit public access to medicine. However, the response could be improved by acknowledging the counter-argument—that private funding can accelerate innovation—to provide a more balanced and nuanced discussion. While the position is clear, the development is somewhat repetitive, focusing heavily on the 'profit' aspect without exploring other potential benefits or drawbacks of different funding models. Overall, it meets the requirements for a clear, well-supported argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'To expound,' 'Moreover,' and 'In that way' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother, and some cohesive devices feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate and appropriate for the task. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'medical research,' 'public welfare,' and 'innovations.' There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'make profit out of it' (better: 'profit from it') and 'give equal access of medical treatments' (better: 'provide equal access to medical treatments'). While the range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher band scores. The vocabulary is functional rather than expressive.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'Increasing number of medical research projects' (missing an article: 'An increasing number') and 'if they will be able to find' (should be 'if they are able to find'). Punctuation is generally correct, though there are occasional awkward phrasings. The errors do not impede communication, and the student shows a reasonable command of sentence structure. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more varied complex structures and greater accuracy in article usage and verb tense consistency.
