Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 174 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas, as the arguments remain superficial and lack sufficient supporting evidence. While you clearly state your position that the government should fund medical research, the supporting points—such as 'public interest' and 'equal access'—are underdeveloped. The essay ends abruptly, failing to provide a complete conclusion. To improve, you must expand on your points with more detailed explanations and concrete examples, ensuring you meet the length requirement to allow for a full exploration of the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay uses basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Furthermore' to signal the progression of ideas. However, the logical flow is often disrupted by fragmented sentences and a lack of clear transitions between the examples and the main arguments. Paragraphing is present, but the final paragraph is incomplete, which hinders the overall structure. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph contains a clear topic sentence followed by well-connected supporting details that lead to a logical conclusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for basic communication but lacks the range and precision required for a higher band score. There is repetition of simple terms like 'medical research', 'private companies', and 'people'. Some word choices are inaccurate, such as 'coming to words the details' and 'following on these terms', which sound unnatural. To improve, try to incorporate more academic collocations and synonyms to express your ideas more precisely. For example, instead of 'too much high', use 'prohibitively expensive'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'government need', 'medicine are not'), incorrect article usage, and sentence fragments. The range of structures is limited, relying mostly on simple sentences. There are also punctuation errors and incomplete thoughts, particularly in the final sentence. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring subjects and verbs agree, and practicing the use of complex sentences with subordinate clauses to demonstrate better control over English grammar.
