IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 9.0)

Funding and conducting medical research is a highly contentious issue, with growing debate over whether it should be managed by private entities, independent individuals, or state bodies. In my opinion, while private corporations and individual researchers play valuable roles, the primary responsibility for conducting and supervising medical research must lie with the government to ensure public safety, ethical integrity, and equal access to health innovations.

The main drawback of relying entirely on private companies is their inherent profit motive. Pharmaceutical corporations naturally prioritize investments in highly lucrative treatments, such as chronic lifestyle diseases, while neglecting less profitable areas like rare tropical diseases or vaccines for developing nations. Furthermore, corporate-funded studies face immense commercial pressure, which can occasionally lead to biased findings or the suppression of unfavorable trial data. Similarly, individual researchers often lack the massive financial capital, state-of-the-art laboratories, and regulatory infrastructure required to safely execute large-scale clinical trials.

Conversely, government-led research prioritizes public welfare over commercial gain. State agencies can objectively direct funding toward urgent national health crises, preventative medicine, and essential antibiotic research that private entities might avoid. For instance, the rapid creation of public health frameworks during global pandemics demonstrates the unparalleled mobilization capability of state-backed institutions. Moreover, government oversight guarantees rigorous ethical standards and transparent peer-review processes, minimizing the risk of scientific malpractice. Ultimately, public funding ensures that life-saving discoveries remain affordable and accessible to the wider population rather than being locked behind expensive private patents.

In conclusion, although private enterprises and individuals contribute essential dynamism and innovation to medicine, the government remains the most reliable authority. State control ensures that medical research is guided by humanitarian needs rather than financial returns.
