Student answer (Band 6.5)

In this contemporary era, science and technology are improving very fast. While some argue private companies should found for medical research I believe that it is the fundamental duty of rich companies, government and individual to help medical research. In this essay I will discuss the reasons behind my thought.

Firstly, medical research is expensive, therefore, it needs to be founded by government and private companies in order to continue the research. For instance, equipment need to be provided and updated for researchers to do the research and some of them are very sensitive and expensive. These equipment will be change more often due to loosing their sensitivity. Therefore, researchers always should have enough budget to replace the devices.

Secondly, medical research should be continuously done because it must be updated. For example, some bacteria keep changing their effect on human or animals. Moreover, the population increasing significantly which more research should be done due to different diseases that are happening across the world. Thus, vaccine or medication should be changed and tested based on the new virus or bacteria. Hence, all that mentioned need huge money which should be founded by government and other companies.

In addition, researchers need to be supported with a good salary. In this way, they can focus on their job. If they are worried about their life they would not be able to do their job properly. Therefore, it needs cooperation of government and private companies to support researches.

All in all, although private companies are a good resource for founding, but I strongly believe that medical research needs government and every body's support and help.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt by arguing for a collaborative approach to funding medical research. While the position is clear, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive. You mention the need for expensive equipment and the necessity of continuous research due to evolving bacteria, but these points are not fully extended with specific, concrete examples beyond general statements. To reach a higher band, focus on providing a more detailed illustration of how a specific government-private partnership might function or the consequences of relying on only one source of funding. The conclusion is a bit brief and could better synthesize the main arguments presented in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'In addition', and 'All in all' to signal the structure. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of referencing is occasionally repetitive. For example, the phrase 'medical research' is repeated frequently where pronouns or synonyms could improve the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, which helps the reader follow your argument. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the transition between your supporting points is smoother.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You frequently use the word 'founded' incorrectly; the correct term in this context is 'funded' (to provide money), whereas 'founded' means to establish or start an institution. Other word choices, such as 'loosing' (should be 'losing') and 'every body's', indicate a need for more careful proofreading. While you attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'vaccine', 'medication', and 'bacteria', the range is limited. To achieve a higher score, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing by using synonyms like 'financial backing', 'subsidies', or 'capital investment'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and articles. For instance, 'equipment need to be provided' should be 'equipment needs to be provided' (as equipment is uncountable), and 'These equipment will be change' should be 'This equipment will be changed'. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and word order. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your argument, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focus on mastering subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice constructions.
