IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

In this contemporary society, most of the medical analysis is being done by privatized institutions. Whether medical related research should be done by private companies, individuals or government has become a contentious argument in modern medical literature. I strongly believe that government should be the one to lead medical related research and in this essay, I will present reasons and examples supporting my viewpoints before concluding with my own opinion.

Although most of the medical research is being done by private companies in this current timeline as they possess state of the art facilities and cutting edge technologies that allows them to perform research and analysis in a more professional and controlled environment. For instance, during the pandemic private equities like Pfizer were able to make Covid-19 Vaccines in record time and distribute it among the populace, saving millions of lives amidst the plague. But they are not doing this solely for the benefit of mankind, they have ulterior motives. First of all, medical related research done by privatized institutions has one purpose above all and that is to make money and generate profits. Even during Covid-19 Pfizer sold Vaccines to the governments of different countries on staggering margins. More often than not, the medicines being released as a result research done by privatized organizations is more expensive and out of reach of the poor and the needy. So, the penurious may not benefit from the analytical progress done by the private equities and stakeholders involved.

Research that has been done by individuals has contributed significantly to society and there have been many luminaries that have saved millions of lives and made lives better all over the world. One notable example is Alexander Fleming, whose discoveries and curiosity led to the invention of Penicillin, which continues to save hundreds of millions of lives even today.

But individual research has limits and requires considerable amount of manpower and assets, which an individual is less likely to possess. Medical research can take a toll on an individual both mentally and physically, so I do not believe that individual research is feasible in the 21st century and should not be promoted as a solution to the current epidemic of lack of research. However, if there is collaboration among the stakeholders then it can be a viable solution.

In my opinion research and analysis done by the government and governmental research can be much more thorough and much more feasible as government possess considerable amount of assets and manpower. These assets are usually a collection taxes from the local populace and government is obligated to provide benefits to the people and especially the penurious which suffer from diseases but not able to get medicine due to financial bankruptcy. Governmental research can help the populace and medicines being released as a result of government related research are more likely to be subsidized and discounted for the local population. As a result, most of the medicine and facilities will be affordable and cheap able to be utilized by the poor and the needy.

In conclusion, government should be leading the medical analysis and research department as it is obligated to provide the populace with facilities, amenities and other basic necessities. The ideal scenario would be a co-operation and collaboration among the individuals, private companies and the government as that would lead to the best possible scenario.
