Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. Some people think this is a good idea, while others believe that the government or individuals should pay for this research. In my opinion, the government should have the biggest responsibility, but private companies can also help.

Firstly, I think the government should pay for most medical research because it is important for everyone. The government does not only think about making money, so it can spend money on diseases that are not common. For example, some rare diseases only affect a small number of people. Private companies may not want to research these diseases because they cannot make much profit. However, the government can still support this kind of research because it helps people's health.

On the other hand, private companies also have some advantages. They usually have better technology and enough money to do research faster. Many new medicines are made by private companies, and this can help save many lives. However, they sometimes care more about profit than patients. Because of this, the price of new medicines can be very high, so not everyone can buy them. This can make healthcare unfair for some people.

Some people think individuals should fund medical research by giving donations. I think this can help a little, but it is not enough because medical research is very expensive. Most people cannot give a large amount of money, so the government is still needed.

In conclusion, I believe the government should pay for most medical research because it can help all people, not only those who can afford expensive medicine. Private companies and individuals should also help, but they should not be the main source of funding.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that the government should be the primary funder while acknowledging the roles of private companies and individuals. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, particularly the contrast between profit-driven research and the need for public health equity. To reach a higher band, the essay could benefit from more specific examples or deeper exploration of the 'individuals' aspect, which is currently treated somewhat briefly. Overall, the argument is well-supported and consistent throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as the government's role, the advantages of private companies, and the limitations of individual donations. Cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the paragraphing is appropriate. The response demonstrates a clear, coherent structure that is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate and appropriate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. Phrases like 'profit-driven', 'healthcare equity', and 'financial burden' would elevate the response, but the current usage is accurate. There is some repetition of basic terms like 'money' and 'research'. To improve, the student should aim to incorporate more precise academic collocations and synonyms to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary, moving beyond simple descriptive language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and punctuation is used correctly. There are no significant errors that impede communication. While the grammar is reliable, the range of complex structures is somewhat limited; incorporating more varied subordinate clauses or passive constructions would demonstrate greater control. The writing is clear and error-free for the most part, which is a strong foundation for higher-level academic writing.
