IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In this developing nation, numerous medical research projects are being funded by several private companies and individuals which leads to failure in building the trust of the citizens in the healthcare sector which should be handed over to only government authorities.
However, not all private companies and individuals are spade, but majority of the citizens could not trust them blindly over the healthcare sector as it plays a significant role in one's life. There is high chance of adulteration during the medical research projects which can lead to severe health diseases among the people. For instance, recently a private blood bank company was booked dure to adulteration in the blood plasma during the research project which was sent all over Maharashtra led to severe harmful reactions in the patient's blood.
Meanwhile, when any medical research project would be handed over to the government authorities, it builds the trust among he citizens and well as guarantees the safety and security during the research . It also provides low funding for research with high quality and professional researchers . Also the government prioritizes the widespread diseases over profitability and provide affordable treatments to the patients which leads to cheaper medications and vaccines and reduces the risk of commercial gain.
In my opinion, the medical research programs should only be carried out by the government professionals along with involving a balanced approach and ideas of private companies and individuals which will yield a better result and will be beneficial for the citizens of the nation as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position that government control is preferable, while acknowledging a role for private entities. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. The argument regarding the 'adulteration' of blood plasma is a specific example, but the explanation of why government control is inherently safer or more efficient is somewhat generalised. To reach a higher band, you should provide more nuanced reasoning regarding the trade-offs between private innovation and government oversight. The conclusion introduces a 'balanced approach' that slightly contradicts the earlier assertion that research should be handed over to 'only government authorities,' creating a minor inconsistency in the development of your position.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. You use cohesive devices such as 'However,' 'Meanwhile,' and 'For instance' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel slightly abrupt. For example, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to better contrast the private and public sectors. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the phrase 'which leads to failure in building the trust' in the introduction, which lacks a clear antecedent. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical, but the use of cohesive devices could be more sophisticated and varied.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'adulteration,' 'healthcare sector,' and 'prioritizes.' However, there are some noticeable errors in word choice and collocation. For instance, the phrase 'not all private companies and individuals are spade' is unclear and likely a misuse of an idiom or a vocabulary error. Additionally, 'booked dure to' should be 'booked due to.' While you attempt to use more academic language, the inaccuracies occasionally hinder the precision of your argument. Expanding your range of collocations and ensuring correct word usage will help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully use complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'which was sent all over Maharashtra led to,' where the relative clause structure is faulty. Other issues include missing articles ('the government,' 'the citizens') and minor punctuation errors. The sentence 'It also provides low funding for research with high quality' is grammatically sound but slightly awkward in its phrasing. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will improve your accuracy.
