Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

These days, mostly medical research projects are dominated by private companies to gain approval for their particular agenda. In my opinion, medical research should be done by individual scientists and professionals.

When a person who is indepedent and does not represent any organization will fairly conduct a medical research.

He is not funded by any source to change the results in its favor, rather than that he is going to work with a responsibility for the greater good of the community. If the research failed to delivier the outcomes , he will held responsible. It is a chance for him to make a name for himself in the field of researchers and become popular among the medical society by providing the result that is beneficial for the whole world.

On the other hand, research carried by private companies is often divert by the authorities in the favor their results. When a new product is launched in market and do not gain the approval of consumers then companies try this method of research and publish these biased results in articles and newspapers to convince the public. In most cases, they successfully change the narrative of the public and make their product even more popular . These are the motives that are behind the medical research projects of private comapnies.

In conclusion, individual research is fair and unbiased. Eventually, will be more beneficial for the general public.

While, private companies focus on their profit and do not care about the need of the people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of individual researchers. However, the development of ideas is limited. While you mention that private companies are biased, the argument for individual researchers is underdeveloped; you claim they work for the 'greater good' without explaining how they would secure the massive funding required for modern medical research. The response is quite brief, and the lack of depth in exploring the role of government—which was explicitly mentioned in the prompt—means the task is only partially addressed. To improve, ensure you provide a balanced view or a more robust justification for why your chosen entity is superior to the others.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is hindered by fragmented sentences and awkward transitions. For example, the second paragraph begins with a sentence fragment: 'When a person who is indepedent... will fairly conduct a medical research.' This makes the flow of ideas disjointed. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the other hand' and 'In conclusion,' but they are often followed by sentences that lack grammatical cohesion with the previous thought. Improving the connection between sentences and ensuring each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would significantly enhance the readability and logical flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. You use some relevant terms like 'biased results' and 'medical research,' but there are several instances of word-choice errors and spelling mistakes, such as 'indepedent' (independent), 'delivier' (deliver), and 'comapnies' (companies). Furthermore, the phrasing 'divert by the authorities in the favor their results' is unnatural and unclear. To reach a higher band, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensure accurate spelling of key terms related to the topic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but the accuracy is inconsistent. You frequently struggle with subject-verb agreement and sentence fragments, such as 'If the research failed to delivier the outcomes , he will held responsible.' This should be 'If the research fails to deliver the outcomes, he will be held responsible.' Additionally, there are issues with article usage and prepositional phrases throughout the text. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these grammatical errors causes some difficulty for the reader and prevents the essay from reaching a higher band.
