Student answer (Band 5.0)
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. I agree, research should be carried out by private companies as it does not have any inteferance from government and helps in new discovery on diverse topics.
Firstly, medical research projects which are funded by private companies can make new discovery on medical topics. Which help to fact check and correct past medical myths which were debated on in the past with no valid source of information regarding the topic of discussion. Due to the project being funded by a private company this gives them the freedom to research on diverse topics which have not been discussed about in the medical field. Furthermore, the research done helps people who may be dealing with problems which had been a rare occurance in the past with no solution.
Secondly, the private companies keep the interest of people in mind which improves helps them to do research on topics which will relate to people and help them since the research done has no government restrictions and limitations such as government budget and technology. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of private funding. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive and lacks depth. While you mention 'new discoveries' and 'diverse topics,' these points are not supported by specific examples or concrete evidence, which is a requirement for a higher band. Furthermore, the essay falls just short of the 250-word minimum, which negatively impacts the task achievement score. To improve, ensure you provide more detailed explanations and perhaps a brief counter-argument or a more nuanced discussion of why government or individual funding might be less effective.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly,' 'Furthermore,' and 'In conclusion' to signal transitions. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the logical progression within paragraphs is limited by the repetitive nature of the arguments. For instance, the second paragraph repeats the idea of 'no government restrictions' multiple times. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that each sentence builds logically upon the previous one rather than restating the same point.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the range and precision required for a higher score. You rely on common words like 'new,' 'help,' and 'good.' There are also some minor issues with word choice, such as 'inteferance' (spelling error) and 'rare occurance' (spelling error). To improve, try to incorporate more academic collocations and topic-specific vocabulary related to medical research and funding models. Using more precise synonyms will help you express your ideas with greater sophistication and clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally hinder the flow. Examples include 'Which help to fact check' (sentence fragment), 'improves helps them' (redundant verb usage), and 'carry out researches' (the word 'research' is uncountable). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and avoiding sentence fragments. Proofreading for basic errors in articles and pluralization would also significantly improve your accuracy.
