Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Medical research plays a pivotal role in global healthcare advancement. While some believe that private entities or individuals should spearhead these projects, I firmly believe that a collaboration approach between private corporations and national governments is the most effective strategy for medical advancement.
To commence with, private companies' goal is to increase their business. To clear it, private sector is fully money-minded so they will go to extreme level to reach their business. Moreover, they will fund on the medical sector to increase customers. That's why, they are achieving their goals day-by-day. For example, in 2021 whole world was affected by COVID-19 in that period both private entities and individuals introduced vaccination to all. In the initial time these injections were free of cost to all people But private companies are sold them in thousands or lakhs to rich people.
On the other hand, governments failed to provide good medicines to people. Nowadays, people prefer to go private hospitals because of better facilities and advanced technology. However, governments hospitals are faded due to lack of equipments like CT Scan machine, MRI or other equipments. For instance, in Sri lanka, most of the governments hospitals do not have proper medicines or doctors so people are going to private sector.
To sum up, while, it has disadvantages such as the government failure to provide good medicines and proper environment to people, the advantages of private sector is to provide better facilities and a great approach to increase their business. Therefore, I strongly believe that advantages far outweigh the drawbacks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the roles of private companies and governments in medical research. However, the development of ideas is inconsistent. While you state a position in the introduction, the body paragraphs struggle to maintain a clear argument. For instance, the second paragraph focuses on the profit-driven nature of private companies, but the link to the prompt's question about who should fund research is weak. The third paragraph shifts to criticizing government hospitals, which is somewhat tangential to the core issue of research funding. To improve, ensure each paragraph directly supports your stated position with logical, well-explained arguments rather than general observations about healthcare systems.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, and there is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Moreover', and 'On the other hand'. However, the use of these devices is often mechanical or slightly unnatural. For example, 'To clear it' is not a standard cohesive phrase. The progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed, particularly in the transition between the discussion of private companies and the critique of government hospitals. Paragraphing is present, but the internal logic within the paragraphs needs to be more tightly controlled to ensure a smoother flow of information throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward phrasing or incorrect word choices, such as 'money-minded', 'faded' (when referring to hospitals), and 'private companies are sold them'. These errors occasionally hinder the clarity of your message. To reach a higher band, focus on using more academic collocations and precise terminology related to the topic, such as 'commercial interests', 'public-private partnerships', or 'infrastructure', rather than relying on informal or imprecise language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of the writing. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'private companies are sold them'), incorrect article usage, and awkward sentence construction (e.g., 'in that period both private entities and individuals introduced vaccination to all'). While these errors do not completely prevent understanding, they are frequent enough to impact the overall quality. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence patterns and proofreading for common errors like pluralization and verb tense consistency.
