Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, a huge proportion of medical projects or researches are funded and supported by private corporations . I believe that these kind of operations of (medical sector) should be financed by huge private companies, but also by some individuals or government organizations too.

On the one hand, the need of assistance of medical projects has been surging day by day. Many projects that needs huge funds or finance support can only be over come by government support. For instance, nowadays, many other side schemes or supporting projects are being launched by government organization to support their own people of different sectors. Like the currently going earthquake crisis or mass amount of severe floods are prime examples. But also some individuals or famous influencers can rise up this issue by contributing or supporting these medical research projects. This can lead to more awareness and more people will going to become a part of it.

On the other hand, I also concur with the perspective that huge private capital corporations or companies should also become a part of medical centers. For example, if we do not have a fund for medicine research projects which are the source of pharmaceutical industry to produce more pills and medicines that can be a huge problem in future. So government should imply some certain tax policies for big companies so that the medical industry does no remain unreliable or independent.

To conclude this, I believe that both government and private companies should become a permanent finance source of medical research projects, so that there can not be any kind of issue in future. A balanced

approach works best that every company or government organization( including some individuals) should be held accountable for funding medical industry .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the roles of private companies, individuals, and the government in funding medical research. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For example, the mention of 'earthquake crisis' or 'severe floods' is not clearly linked to the core topic of medical research funding, making the argument feel slightly disjointed. While a clear position is maintained throughout, the supporting arguments lack depth and specific, relevant examples that would elevate the response to a higher band. The conclusion provides a summary, but the reasoning remains general rather than analytical.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude this' are used to signal the structure. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as in the second paragraph where the connection between natural disasters and medical research funding is not clearly established. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved to ensure a smoother progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their opinions clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'pharmaceutical industry' and 'capital corporations'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'rise up this issue' (should be 'raise awareness of this issue') and 'medical industry does no remain unreliable' (which is confusing in context). The range of vocabulary is sufficient for communication but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Many projects that needs', 'people will going to become') and awkward phrasing ('the need of assistance of medical projects'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors in sentence construction. The errors do not significantly impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. A greater focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would be beneficial.
