Student answer (Band 5.5)

In this modern era, multiple medical research projects are financed by private companies. In my opinion, i don't think if it only falls into the private companies or individuals hands, they will exploit it.

On the one hand, private companies in medical department will research to develop a medicine for a cure, they will sell it for profit not to help the people. Governments should involve in the research so they will not exploit. Governments also should work on the policies like giving subsidies. For example, when covid occur, government giving free shots of vaccine to the people while private companies who made vaccine, charged money for it.

On the other hand, some individual researchers were do the great work for humanity as well because several times government will not able to help every citizen and most of the time government hospitals are full of beds and focus on needed people. For instance, in covid people had waited for so long, just to get vaccine shot. While private or individuals are charge for it but do the treatment instantly and provide best medical services. Also, private companies are expensive because they use best combination of medicines to treat the people.

In conclusion, Government should involve in the private or individual research so they cannot be able to exploit the medicine or invention of medical procedure and treatments. Government should provide the subsidies so that private medical researches and researchers will be helped and increase their morals to invent more medicine or treatment which helps people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the roles of private companies and government in medical research. However, the position is somewhat inconsistent. While you argue against private-only funding, the development of ideas is limited. For instance, the paragraph regarding individual researchers is slightly confusing, as it conflates individual researchers with private companies and provides contradictory arguments about their efficiency versus their cost. To reach a higher band, ensure each paragraph focuses on a single, well-supported argument that directly answers the prompt's question about who should carry out research. The conclusion provides a summary but could be more decisive regarding your final stance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. For example, the transition 'On the other hand' is used to introduce a point that actually supports the previous argument about the limitations of government, rather than contrasting it. Additionally, referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the sentence 'they will exploit it,' where the antecedent for 'it' is ambiguous. Improving the logical flow between sentences and using a wider variety of linking words would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. You rely on repetitive phrasing, such as 'medical research' and 'people,' and some word choices are unnatural, such as 'increase their morals' (likely meaning 'morale' or 'incentive') and 'government giving free shots.' There are also minor errors in collocation, such as 'research to develop a medicine for a cure.' To improve, try to incorporate more academic collocations and precise terminology related to public policy and medical funding to demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'some individual researchers were do the great work'), article usage (e.g., 'when covid occur'), and tense consistency. Furthermore, sentence construction is sometimes awkward, such as 'they cannot be able to exploit,' which is redundant. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement will help improve your accuracy.
