IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Private companies financing the capital for medical research projects are becoming well-established at this moment. This essay will discuss whether private companies or individuals or government needs to support research projects.
The main reason why it is appropriate for private companies to fund research is because they have the financial capacity and resources. They treat the projects as business investments, which in the long term will produce revenues in the future. Besides, these can lessen the worries of the government and focus more on other relevant issues that we face today. Take, for example, Bill Gates who funded several research projects. Providing funds is never a hindrance for these billionaires simply because they have other businesses to continue and they know that funding those projects is not guaranteed. However, I believed that this should be a joint project of the government and private companies.
On the other hand, the government does not have the full capacity to fund medical research. If the government argues to the public because to lose is to gain. The funds, lost from the projects could have been for other sectors that needed more support. For example, the agricultural sectors suffer from the changing climate and they can not produce better crops. The government could have subsidised agriculture instead of medical projects.
In conclusion, although the government could support medical research projects they do not have the same luxury as private entities that can lose large sums of money. I believe that private companies should fully fund the projects without having to worry about when they can get back the capital.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the funding of medical research. However, the position is inconsistent. In the first paragraph, you mention a 'joint project,' but the conclusion argues that private companies should 'fully fund' the projects. This lack of a clear, sustained position limits the score. Furthermore, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument regarding the government's inability to fund research is logically weak, as governments often prioritize public health. The example of Bill Gates is relevant, but the explanation of why this is a model for others is underdeveloped. To improve, ensure your thesis statement is clear and that every paragraph directly supports that specific stance throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'Besides,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In conclusion.' However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical or slightly disjointed. For example, the transition in the second paragraph from discussing private companies to mentioning Bill Gates feels abrupt. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'If the government argues to the public because to lose is to gain,' which is syntactically confusing and hinders the logical progression of the argument. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence flows naturally from the previous one will help achieve a higher band.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'financial capacity,' 'subsidised,' and 'entities.' However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and awkward phrasing that limit the score. For example, 'financing the capital' is not a standard collocation, and 'the government argues to the public because to lose is to gain' is unclear and lacks academic precision. While you attempt to use some less common vocabulary, the errors in collocation and phrasing occasionally impede the reader's understanding. To improve, focus on learning word partnerships (collocations) and ensuring that your vocabulary is used in the correct context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there are some successful complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect clarity. For instance, 'I believed that this should be a joint project' uses an incorrect tense, and 'they can not produce better crops' is a bit simplistic. The sentence 'If the government argues to the public because to lose is to gain' is grammatically incoherent. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the overall control of complex structures is inconsistent. To reach a higher band, focus on reducing these frequent errors and ensuring that your complex sentences are constructed accurately to convey your ideas clearly.
