IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In the present time a lot of medical research programs are financially supported by private companies. Medical research projects should be carried out at great scale. Government should also take part in this aspect.

As nowadays there are a lot of private medical companies which conducts medical research on their own rather than relying in any other factor they do everthing in their own. This encourages other people to search about medical resources and problems related to this field. As in my country there are a lot of medical companies which do researches on their own like Alghani and Chugtai labs . These labs are doing a lot in this field and progressing in achieveing good health for people. These private ones are expensive but they are reliable as they give the result of any test in 24 hours or sometimes even more earlier. As last year I want to check my blood group so I went to Alghani lab and get the test. In around 12 hours I got the result.

According to my perpective government research is way much better than individual research. Because if government conducts the research there will be more resources not only in medical field but also in the financial one its only for the reason that government can commense research projects on national level and sometimes globally. Further sometimes there are requirements of heavy machinary to conduct research which is only managed by government. Government should also interact with international grounds to progress in this field and to support its people health and to ensure their healthy and sound life.

In conclusion I would say that private companies are doing well in this research but they lack funds which for government is very easy to handle. If private companies and government unite there will be immense progress in medical research.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the roles of private companies and the government in medical research. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While you provide a personal example regarding lab testing, the argument for government involvement is more theoretical and lacks specific examples. The position is clear, but the discussion of 'individuals' as a category is largely ignored, which is a minor omission. To improve, ensure that all parts of the prompt are given equal weight and that your arguments are supported by more detailed reasoning or broader examples rather than just personal anecdotes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'As nowadays', 'As in my country', 'As last year'). Some transitions between sentences are abrupt, and the logical flow within paragraphs could be smoother. For instance, the jump from private labs to the government's role in the third paragraph lacks a strong linking phrase. Improving the variety of your cohesive devices and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would significantly enhance the overall structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. You rely on basic terms like 'do' and 'good' repeatedly. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'commense' (commence) and 'international grounds' (international level/arena). While the meaning is clear, the range of vocabulary is limited to common, everyday language. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more academic collocations and topic-specific terminology related to research, funding, and public policy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'government... which conducts'), missing articles (e.g., 'in medical field'), and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'sometimes even more earlier'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas and periods. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage would be a great next step.
