IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Today, Private companies are investing more in medical research projects so should this research be carried out by government organizations, private organizations or solo researchers. In my opinion this should be done by government because the medical research is a dangerous sector to mess with and medicines have to be available to every individuals of country in affordable price.
The medical research projects can produce disasters or poisonous results that can be harmful to the humans, animals or even nature. A private organization controlling human viruses can be a threat to its own people or even they can sell this to other countries.
If medical research start getting controlled by private sector then there is a possibility that price of the medicines can be controlled by the private seller without any competition and medicines wont be available to every individuals of the country in affordable rate.
On the other side if multiple private organizations start doing research in same direction. It can help finding the vaccines in emergency times. It also increase competition and speed up the research significantly. And competitors can also collaborate in order to share knowledge and findings to make better or affordable medicines.
Overall, the medical research can be dangerous. So for safety purposes some medical projects needs to be kept in hands of government. But most of research around medicines should be allowed to be done by private companies to speed up the results and get new findings in medical industries that can be helpful for people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the roles of government and private companies in medical research. However, the development is somewhat inconsistent. While you provide a clear opinion, the arguments regarding 'disasters' and 'poisonous results' are quite speculative and lack concrete examples or logical depth. The conclusion contradicts your initial stance by suggesting that most research should be private, which weakens the overall position. To improve, ensure your arguments are more balanced and logically consistent throughout the essay, and provide specific, real-world examples to support your claims rather than relying on hypothetical scenarios.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., starting sentences with 'The medical research', 'If medical research', 'On the other side'). There are also issues with referencing; for example, the phrase 'this should be done' in the introduction is slightly vague. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to connect your ideas more fluidly, and ensure that pronouns clearly refer back to their intended antecedents.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. You rely on basic terms like 'dangerous sector', 'poisonous results', and 'good/bad' concepts. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'mess with' and 'every individuals of country'. To improve, try to incorporate more academic and topic-specific vocabulary related to medical ethics, public policy, and economic competition. Using more precise synonyms will help you express your ideas with greater sophistication and clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'medical research projects needs'), article usage (e.g., 'in affordable price' instead of 'at an affordable price'), and pluralization errors (e.g., 'every individuals'). While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, particularly with articles, prepositions, and plural forms, to ensure your writing is more polished.
