IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In this contemporary society, most of the medicine related analysis are being sponsored by privatised institutes. I strongly believe that government should be leading the medical research projects along with privatised organizations and individual acting as support. In this essay, I will provide reasons and examples to support my viewpoint.

Most of the research in the current era, is being done by private companies and due to the cutting edge and state of the art technology possessed by the privatised organizations they are able to produce quality results and medicines, which are highly applauded by the public as well. However, as they have to answer to the stakeholders involved in the medicine related projects, they mostly focus on the projects that can generate profits in the short-term. For instance, private organizations would be less likely to contribute to research in an area where the immediate prospects of profit are low and hence contribute to societal degradation. Companies like Pfizer charged governments huge sums to subsidize the Covid-19 vaccine during the pandemic and made astronomical amounts of money.

There have been many luminaries who have saved millions of lives over the course of the century, notably Alexander Fleming and his research on Penicillin, which led to the panacea to the problems of the epidemic faced by a large number of population at that time. Similarly, Elon Musk and his contributions to society, in particular Nueralink has been on the rise to help the paralyzed, decrepit and paraplegic people. However, individual research by a common person has its limits, a sole person lacks the financial, and human resource necessary to make a worthy contribution to society and hence might require help from private organizations or government.

Governmental research can be of enormous benefits to less affluent and the penurious, as the the medicine that results from it can be heavily subsidized and can thus be utilized by the masses, who would otherwise be unable to afford that particular medicine. For instance, a baldness cure being sold by a private company and brands like Rogaine will be on average 5 times more expensive than bland and over the counter available medicine of the same formula, which is subsidized by the government. Government can focus on the long-term research, which may not benefit private companies in the moment. A good example would be the research on mRNA which eventually lead to the discovery of vaccine against Covid-19 and was the panacea or the miracle cure that saved tons of lives.

In conclusion, I would highly suggest government to be the leader in medical research, however contribution and co-operation among the individuals, private companies and government would lead to the betterment of the society as a whole.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have clearly addressed all parts of the prompt, providing a well-defined position that advocates for government-led research supported by private and individual efforts. Your arguments are logically structured, and you provide relevant examples, such as the Covid-19 vaccine and the work of Alexander Fleming, to support your claims. The ideas are extended and developed throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, ensure that your examples are always directly linked to the core argument; for instance, the mention of Rogaine is a bit specific and could be better integrated into the broader point about accessibility and government subsidies.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Similarly', and 'In conclusion' to link your thoughts effectively. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions between sentences could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. For example, the shift from discussing private companies to individuals could be bridged more fluidly. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the logical structure is easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, including sophisticated terms like 'panacea', 'astronomical', 'penurious', and 'decrepit'. You show an awareness of style and collocation, which is a strength. However, there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice, such as using 'medicine related analysis' instead of 'medical research' or 'medicine-related studies'. Additionally, 'bland' is not the most precise word to describe generic medicine. Despite these minor slips, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey complex ideas with precision and flexibility, meeting the requirements for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a variety of complex structures, such as conditional clauses and relative clauses, which shows good grammatical control. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is generally accurate. There are a few minor slips, such as 'government should be leading' (should lead) or 'the medicine that results from it' (where 'it' refers to research, but the phrasing is slightly awkward). You also have a minor error in 'lead to the discovery' (should be 'led' to maintain past tense consistency). These errors are infrequent and do not impede communication.
